Best Squoosh alternative

The best Squoosh alternative keeps its encoders and adds what it lacks: 50 images at once, an exact size in KB, HEIC in any browser, and an API now that the Squoosh CLI is gone. Free, no signup. Squoosh keeps your images on your device; Blinkimg uploads them.

The short answer

Why Blinkimg is the best Squoosh alternative

Squoosh is the best place to tune one image by eye. Blinkimg runs the same JPEG and WebP encoders and takes the jobs Squoosh leaves out: many files, a size you set, iPhone photos and automation.

  1. 01Images at once

    50Squoosh: 1

    A folder, not a file

Squoosh's FAQ answers "Not yet" to batch, and its code keeps the first file you drop. Blinkimg takes 50 in one drop.

  2. 02Same JPEG encoder

    253,349 BSquoosh: 253,359 B

    MozJPEG on both sides

At quality 75 our JPEG of the reference photo came within 10 bytes of Squoosh's, at the same 36.5 dB PSNR.

  3. 03Exact size

    KB targetSquoosh: None

    Type the limit once

Squoosh shows the size after each change. Blinkimg aims at the number you type and never returns a file over it.

  4. 04HEIC in Chrome

    YesSquoosh: Safari only

    iPhone photos, any browser

Squoosh has no HEIC decoder, for licence reasons. Ours decodes HEIC on the server, so the browser does not matter.

  5. 05Scripts and agents

    API + MCPSquoosh: None

    Automation that still exists

The Squoosh CLI was removed on 3 January 2023, and Squoosh has no API. Blinkimg has a REST API and an MCP server.

  6. 06Download

    One ZIPSquoosh: One file

The whole batch back at once

Squoosh downloads one file per side. Blinkimg returns each file, or the whole batch as one ZIP.

Squoosh, fairly

What the Squoosh image compressor does well, and where it stops

Squoosh is the deepest free compressor for a single image. Its limits are about volume, automation and its own future.

What Squoosh does well

  • A split view you can drag

Two encoders side by side, a divider you drag, and zoom that stays in sync. You see what each setting does.

  • Every encoder option

Trellis passes, quantization tables, chroma subsampling, AVIF tuning, JPEG XL filters: not one quality number, dozens.

  • Formats few tools write

JPEG XL, WebP v2 and QOI beside AVIF, WebP, MozJPEG and OxiPNG, with lossless modes for four of them.

  • Nothing uploads, even offline

Images never leave your device. Installed as an app, it caches its encoders and works with no connection.

  • Open source and free

Apache 2.0, every encoder build public. No price, no ads, no account.

Where Squoosh stops

  • One image at a time

Its FAQ answers "Not yet" to batch. A folder of 50 photos is 50 rounds of open, set and save.

  • No CLI and no API

The CLI and its library were removed on 3 January 2023 for staffing reasons, with no official replacement.

  • No size target

A form’s 100 KB limit means moving the slider and reading the size until it fits.

  • HEIC only in Safari

No HEIC decoder of its own, so an iPhone photo opens only where the browser decodes it.

  • Its future is unsettled

The last merged change was in August 2024. Its maintainer wrote in 2026 that Google refused to hand it over or maintain it.

Squoosh and Blinkimg on the same photos

We ran two photos through the live squoosh.app at its own defaults and through our engine on 16 October 2026, and kept the exact bytes. PSNR scores each file against the original; higher is closer.

  • Finding 1

    Same JPEG, same WebP

Both run MozJPEG and libwebp with the same defaults, so at one quality the files match within bytes.
  • Finding 2

    AVIF is a choice

Squoosh's default AVIF is smaller on the camera photo; ours keeps 1.9 dB more detail. Pick the size you need.
  • Finding 3

    The rest is workflow

Once the encoders match, the difference is how many files, which formats in and whether a size is guaranteed.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

How to choose

The best Squoosh alternative for each job

Pick by how many images, where they must stay and whether a script runs it. Three of the six picks are not ours.

  • A folder of photos

    BlinkimgOur pick

50 images in one drop, the same JPEG encoder, back as one ZIP.

  • A form with a KB limit

    BlinkimgOur pick

Type the number once. The file lands at or under it, in JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

  • A script, a build or an AI agent

    BlinkimgOur pick

The REST API and the MCP server do what the removed Squoosh CLI did, with a size target too.

  • Tuning one image by eye

    Squoosh

The split view and every encoder option, JPEG XL included, for the one image that matters.

  • Nothing may leave the device

    Squooshorcompressjpeg.com

Both compress in your browser. Squoosh even works offline once installed.

  • Hundreds of files, offline

    ImageOptimorCaesium

Desktop apps for whole folders: ImageOptim on a Mac, Caesium on Windows and macOS.

Edge cases

  • An iPhone HEIC in Chrome

    Blinkimg

Decoded on our servers and saved as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

    Squoosh

Not opened: no HEIC decoder of its own. Safari can open it.

  • Fifty photos from a shoot

    Blinkimg

One batch of 50, back as one ZIP.

    Squoosh

Fifty rounds. Saved settings help you repeat one.

  • A form that wants under 100 KB

    Blinkimg

Type 100 into Max file size. The file lands at or under it, in one pass.

    Squoosh

Move the quality slider and read the size until it fits.

  • A transparent PNG saved as JPEG

    Blinkimg

Transparent areas go onto white, since JPEG has no transparency.

    Squoosh

Its maintainer says MozJPEG ignores all transparency data.

  • A phone photo stored sideways

    Blinkimg

The EXIF rotation is applied before metadata is stripped, so it stays upright.

    Squoosh

The rotation is ignored; use the Rotate button.

  • An SVG logo

    Blinkimg

Not accepted. Export it as PNG first.

    Squoosh

Opened and resized as a vector, then saved as a bitmap.

  • A 50-megapixel camera file

    Blinkimg

Over 30 MB on Free; Pro takes 90 MB a file.

    Squoosh

No limit stated. Open reports show memory errors on very large images.

  • No internet connection

    Blinkimg

Nothing works: every file uploads first.

    Squoosh

Works, once the app is installed and its encoders are cached.

  • A build step that ran the Squoosh CLI

    Blinkimg

One HTTPS call per image, or ask an AI agent through the MCP server.

    Squoosh

Removed on 3 January 2023; the maintainer invited forks.

Privacy

Is it safe? How each side handles your images

The two tools make opposite choices. Squoosh never sees your image; Blinkimg uploads it and deletes it on a timer.

Blinkimg

  • Uploaded, then deleted within 24 hours

Each image is processed on our servers and wiped within 24 hours. We keep nothing after that.

  • Metadata stripped by default

The GPS position and camera details stay out of the result unless you keep them.

  • Analytics without cookies

Microsoft Clarity runs with no cookie, the compressor is masked, and it never loads under Do Not Track.

  • Never trained on, never sold

No image trains a model, ours or anyone else’s, and no person opens your files.

Squoosh

  • Nothing uploaded

Its README: Squoosh does not send your image to a server; all compression runs locally.

  • Google Analytics, with image sizes

The same README lists visitor data and each image’s before and after size, rounded to the kilobyte.

  • Metadata always removed

Non-visual data is discarded on purpose, so EXIF and GPS never reach the output.

  • Open source

Every line, including the analytics call, is public under Apache 2.0.

For images that must never leave your device, Squoosh is the better design, and so are compressjpeg.com and the desktop apps.

Questions, answered

Squoosh's facts come from its own app, README, FAQ and code; ours are the limits the tool enforces and the files the engine produced.

What is the best Squoosh alternative?

For many images at once, an exact size or iPhone HEIC files in any browser, Blinkimg: 50 images a batch, the same MozJPEG and WebP encoders, an API and an MCP server, free with no signup. To tune one image by eye with nothing uploaded, Squoosh is still the better tool.

Can Squoosh batch compress multiple images at once?

No. Its own FAQ answers "Not yet" and calls batch its most popular request, and the app keeps only the first file you drop. Blinkimg takes 50 images in one drop, 30 MB each, and returns them one by one or as a single ZIP.

Is Squoosh still maintained?

The app is live, and the last change merged into its code was on 19 August 2024. In May 2026 its maintainer, Jake Archibald, wrote that Google refused to hand the project over or maintain it. He still has commit access and has a draft update for its AVIF and JPEG XL encoders.

Is the Squoosh app legit and safe to use?

Yes. It is open source under Apache 2.0, from Google Chrome Labs, and it never sends your image to a server: compression runs on your device. Its README also says it uses Google Analytics and records each image’s before and after size, rounded to the kilobyte.

Is there a Squoosh CLI alternative?

The Squoosh CLI and its library were removed on 3 January 2023 for staffing reasons, with no official replacement. Blinkimg’s REST API runs the same JPEG and WebP encoders from any script, and its MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor compress local files in a sentence.

Can Squoosh compress an image to a specific size, like 100 KB?

No. Every Squoosh encoder works by quality and effort, and a request for a target-size slider has been open since July 2024. You move the slider and read the size. In Blinkimg you type 100 KB once and the file comes back at or under it.

Can Squoosh open HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Only where the browser decodes HEIC itself, such as Safari. Squoosh has no HEIC decoder of its own because the format carries licence fees, so the same photo fails in Chrome. Blinkimg decodes HEIC on its servers and saves it as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Does Squoosh keep EXIF data and GPS location?

No, by design: its maintainers say non-visual data is discarded to keep files small. It also ignores the EXIF rotation, so a sideways phone photo needs the Rotate button. Blinkimg strips EXIF and GPS by default too, applies the rotation first, and keeps metadata if you tick Keep EXIF.

Does Squoosh work offline?

Yes. It installs as a web app and caches its encoders, then shows Ready to work offline. That is a real edge: Blinkimg compresses on its servers, so it needs a connection, and every file uploads before it is processed and is deleted within 24 hours.

Is Blinkimg’s compression as good as Squoosh’s?

For JPEG and WebP it is the same encoding. On our 1920 × 1280 reference photo at quality 75, our JPEG came within 10 bytes of Squoosh’s with the same PSNR, and our WebP matched its size to the byte. The difference is everything around the encoder.

Does Squoosh have an API?

No. Its FAQ says the app runs completely client-side without a server-side API. Blinkimg’s API compresses, converts and resizes over HTTPS, holds an exact byte target, and starts with 500 free credits a month, the same credits its MCP server uses.

What is the best lossless image compression tool?

For lossless work Squoosh is strong: OxiPNG, and lossless modes for WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL. Blinkimg keeps every pixel only at quality 100; its Auto setting is lossy by design. On a Mac, ImageOptim is lossless by default and works offline.

Is Squoosh free?

Yes. It shows no price anywhere, no ads and no sign-in; its maintainer once wrote that it is not a money-making app. Blinkimg’s tool is free too, with no account. A paid plan only raises its limits and adds API credits.

Why trust a Squoosh comparison that Blinkimg wrote?

Because you can check each line. Every Squoosh fact is quoted from its app, README, FAQ or code, read on 2 October 2026, and linked below. The measurements come from the live squoosh.app at its defaults. Where Squoosh wins, on privacy, offline use and control, the page says so.
