AVIF Converter

An AVIF converter turns an AVIF into a format everything opens, or your images into AVIF, the smallest of the modern web formats. Blinkimg is AVIF-first, so this is home turf. Part of the image converter.

AVIF converter: which direction do you need?

An AVIF photo converting out to three formats: JPG, which opens everywhere; PNG, which keeps the transparency; and WebP, for sites that take WebP but not AVIF. Under it, the other direction: JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC convert into AVIF for a faster site.

This page runs both ways, because AVIF traffic splits in two. "I have an AVIF that won't open": saved from a website, sent by a designer, rejected by an older app. Convert it out: AVIF to JPG (opens everywhere), AVIF to PNG (keeps transparency), or AVIF to WebP (for platforms that accept WebP but not AVIF). "I want my images AS AVIF", for a faster site: convert in, JPG to AVIF, PNG to AVIF, WebP to AVIF or HEIC to AVIF. The tool above handles either; the pair pages go deep on each.

The AVIF format in brief

What an AVIF file is: an image on the AV1 video codec, standardised in 2019; the same photo at 123.9 KB where the JPG is 273.9 KB, both at Auto; transparency, 10-bit colour and HDR; rendered by about 95% of browsers, refused by some older viewers and print.

An image compressed with the AV1 video codec in a HEIF container, standardised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. On our reference image it came out 55% smaller than a JPEG at Auto, with transparency, 10-bit colour and HDR in the specification. About 95% of browsers render it, which is why websites serve it and why a saved file sometimes will not open in an older viewer or a print pipeline. The whole story, from the file’s first bytes to opening it on every device, is in what is an AVIF file.

Why won't my AVIF open? The rescue guide

Where an AVIF opens: Windows 10 and 11 with the free AV1 Video Extension, kept updated; Photoshop from 26.8 (June 2025), older versions with a plugin; macOS Preview from Ventura (2022); not Android galleries before 12 or most email clients. A JPG or PNG copy opens everywhere.

Windows 10/11: Photos, Paint and Office need the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. If one AVIF still fails, update it: its release notes added the 4:4:4 colour layout our engine writes. Photoshop: native from version 26.8 (June 2025); older versions need a plugin. macOS: Preview opens AVIF from Ventura (2022) onward; older Macs don’t. Android galleries before Android 12, most email clients: no. The pragmatic fix is one conversion to JPG or PNG rather than a codec hunt on every machine the file will ever touch. That is what the tool above is for.

What AVIF is worth, measured both ways

ConversionBeforeAfterChange
AVIF → JPG (Auto)363 KB271.6 KB-25%
AVIF → WebP363 KB216.8 KB-40%
JPG → AVIF (q60)576.8 KB178.3 KB−69%
Photo saved as PNG → AVIF4096.3 KB123.9 KB−97%

Converting OUT of AVIF trades bytes for compatibility, so sizes grow. Converting IN is where the savings live. Reference files, Auto quality.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

What survives each conversion?

A transparent AVIF logo converting three ways: PNG and WebP keep the transparency, JPG fills it with white, previewed first. HDR and 10-bit colour are tone-mapped to 8-bit sRGB, animated AVIFs are declined, and metadata is stripped by default unless one checkbox keeps it.

Transparency: preserved into PNG and WebP; flattened onto white for JPG (JPEG has no alpha, and we preview the flattening before you commit). HDR and 10-bit colour: tone-mapped to standard 8-bit sRGB on every output, the same thing any JPG/PNG workflow does. Animation: declined rather than silently reduced to frame one. Metadata: stripped by default on every output; keep it with one checkbox in Advanced settings.

When converting out of AVIF is a mistake

  • The file is only for your own website?

Keep AVIF. 95% of browsers render it and it is the smallest option. Convert out only for the tools that reject it.

  • Bulk-converting a whole site "for safety"?

You would trade the smallest files your pages can send for a fear: on our reference image the AVIF was 55% under the JPEG at Auto. Use a picture-element fallback instead and keep the AVIFs.

  • Passing files to a designer?

Ask what they need first. PNG for editing beats JPG, and the original source file beats both.

Questions, answered

Short answers specific to this page. The tool above settles most of them in a second.

What does an AVIF converter do?

It works both ways. Out of AVIF, it decodes the AV1 picture and writes a JPG, PNG or WebP that older apps and upload forms accept. Into AVIF, it takes a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC and writes the smaller file a website serves: on our reference image, the AVIF at Auto came out 55% smaller than the JPEG at Auto.

Why won't Windows Photos open my AVIF?

Either the free AV1 Video Extension is missing, or it is out of date: its release notes added support for 4:4:4 video, the colour layout our engine and other encoders write for AVIF. Install or update it from the Microsoft Store, or convert the file to JPG or PNG once, which every viewer opens.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG or PNG?

Drop the file into the converter, pick JPEG or PNG as the output, and download. Up to 10 files per run with one ZIP. JPG is the "opens everywhere" target. PNG is for when you need transparency preserved or lossless onward editing.

Is AVIF better than WebP?

Smaller, on every photo we measured. At each format's default our camera photo came out at 288 KB as AVIF and 329 KB as WebP, 12% less, and a real iPhone photo at 473.7 KB against 748.5 KB. WebP counters with slightly wider support and faster encoding. For the web, serve AVIF first with a WebP fallback and take both wins.

Will the JPG be bigger than my AVIF?

Often, because AVIF compresses better: our reference photo weighs 123.2 KB as an AVIF at Auto and 271.6 KB as a JPG at Auto. An AVIF saved at a high quality can come out larger than its JPG copy, as our 363 KB reference AVIF did. Either way the JPG opens everywhere, which is the point of the copy.

Does Photoshop support AVIF?

Yes, from Photoshop 26.8, the June 2025 release, which opens, edits and saves AVIF. Older versions need a third-party plugin. GIMP opens it natively and macOS Preview works from Ventura. For an editing workflow in older software, convert to PNG at quality 100 first: it holds the decoded AVIF exactly.

How do I batch convert AVIF files?

Drop up to 10 per run, in either direction: AVIF out to JPG/PNG/WebP, or JPG/PNG/WebP/HEIC in to AVIF. You get one ZIP download, filenames preserved, measured sizes per row, no signup, and a 300-image daily allowance. Mixed input formats in one batch are fine.

Does AVIF support transparency and animation?

Yes, both are in the specification. Transparency survives every conversion that targets a format with alpha (PNG, WebP). Converting to JPG flattens it onto white, and the result preview shows that before you download. We decline animated AVIF inputs rather than silently flattening them.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Chrome 85+ (2020), Firefox 93+ (2021), Safari 16.1+ (2022), Edge 121+ (2024): about 95% of global traffic. The gap is old browsers and some embedded webviews. That is why sites serve AVIF inside a picture element with a WebP or JPEG fallback.

What happens to my files here?

We keep nothing. We process your files, wipe them automatically, and never archive them or use them for anything else. We strip metadata from outputs by default. No account, no watermark, and a 300-image daily allowance counted live beside the tool.
