Is PNG to PDF lossless?

Our reference photo saved as a 4,096.3 KB PNG, two ways: with no budget it stays a PNG page and the PDF weighs 1,314.4 KB; with a 100 KB budget the page becomes a 97.1 KB JPEG and the PDF weighs 98.1 KB.

At quality 100, yes: the converter keeps a PNG as a PNG page and the PDF stores every pixel. On Auto the engine first gives a photo 256 colours, which keeps the look and changes each pixel a little; a logo or a flat graphic comes through exact. The PDF adds no second lossy step either way. Our reference photo as a 4,096.3 KB PNG became a 1,314.4 KB PDF, 32% of the source. A PNG page costs bytes, though. When a portal caps the file, set Max PDF size in Advanced settings: each page becomes a JPEG under its share, and the same photo came to 98.1 KB under a 100 KB budget. The JPG to PDF under 200 KB page opens with a budget already set.

What happens to a transparent PNG background in a PDF?

A 7.9 KB PNG logo on a transparent background as a PDF: the page keeps the PNG and its transparency, and the sheet under it is white, so the empty areas show and print white. The PDF weighs 6.8 KB.

The transparency stays in the file and shows as white. The PNG page keeps its alpha channel, and every sheet the converter makes is white under the image, so the empty areas read white on screen and print white on paper. Our 7.9 KB logo PNG made a 6.8 KB PDF. For a logo on a coloured page instead, put the colour behind it in an editor before you convert. A budget changes this: a JPEG page has no transparency, so the engine fills those areas with white before it saves the page.

Does text in a PNG screenshot stay sharp in the PDF?

Yes. A PNG stays a PNG page, so the letters keep their hard edges and never pick up the soft halo a JPEG page can put around text. On Auto the engine gives the page up to 256 colours; quality 100 keeps every pixel. Our screenshot of our pricing page, a 2880 × 1800 PNG full of text, made a 359 KB PDF from 1,121.1 KB, 32% of the PNG. The page keeps the PNG’s own pixels, scaled to fit a landscape A4 sheet with its shape kept, so zoom in the PDF reader the way you would on the PNG. To keep a long thread readable, crop it into a few screen-sized PNGs and drop them in order.

How do I combine several PNGs into one PDF?

Three PNGs dropped together, a screenshot, a diagram and a photo, become pages 1 to 3 of one PDF in the order they were dropped; up to 50 images go in one drop.

Drop them all at once. Each PNG becomes a page, in the order you dropped them, and the PDF assembles itself when the last page is done, up to 50 images in one drop. The file names do not set the order; the drop does. Select the files in the order you want the pages, or drop them one after another into the same batch. JPG files can join the same PDF, and so can up to 10 WebP, AVIF or HEIC files, which is handy for a report that mixes screenshots and photos.   • You need to edit the text later

    A PDF made from a PNG holds a picture of the text, not the text itself. Search and copy work only after OCR in a PDF editor.

  • The PNG is a logo for print

    A print shop wants the vector original (SVG, AI or EPS). A PNG page prints at its own pixels, however large the sheet.

  • The form wants an image, not a PDF

    Some portals take a JPG or PNG upload only. Compress the PNG on its own page instead of wrapping it in a PDF.

How do I convert a PNG to PDF for free?

Drop the PNG on the converter at the top of the page. The page is built and the PDF downloads on its own, with no signup and no watermark. You can drop up to 50 PNGs at once and get one PDF with a page for each, in the order you dropped them.

Does converting PNG to PDF reduce quality?

Not much with the default settings. Each PNG becomes a PNG page. On Auto the engine gives a photo 256 colours first, which keeps the look and changes each pixel a little; a logo or a flat graphic comes through exact. Set quality 100 in Advanced settings and every pixel you see in the PNG is the pixel in the PDF. Quality drops further only with a Max PDF size, which turns each page into a JPEG that fits.

Why is my PNG to PDF file bigger than I expected?

Because a PNG page keeps far more detail than a JPEG page does. Our reference photo as a 4,096.3 KB PNG made a 1,314.4 KB PDF: smaller than the PNG, yet more than 4 times the 275 KB PDF the same photo makes as a JPG. Set Max PDF size in Advanced settings and it lands at 98.1 KB under a 100 KB budget.

What page size does the PDF use?

A4, turned to match each image: a tall or square PNG gets an upright sheet and a wide one a landscape sheet. The image is scaled to fit the sheet with its shape kept, centred on a white ground. A mix of tall screenshots and wide banners reads the right way up throughout.

Can I convert a PNG to PDF on iPhone or Android?

Yes, in the phone browser. Open this page, tap the drop zone and pick the PNGs from Photos or Files. The PDF saves to your downloads, and the Share sheet sends it anywhere from there. Nothing to install, and the page works the same on a tablet or a laptop.

Can I put PNG and JPG files in the same PDF?

Yes. Drop them together and each file becomes a page in drop order. A JPG page stays a JPEG and a PNG page stays a PNG, and a HEIC, WebP or AVIF becomes a JPEG page. The pages can differ in shape too, since each sheet turns with its own image.

Is it safe to convert screenshots of documents or IDs?

We keep nothing. Files are processed and wiped automatically, deleted within 24 hours of upload at the latest, and never used for anything else. EXIF metadata, GPS location included, is stripped from every page, and there is no account attached to what you convert.

How many PNGs can one PDF hold?

Up to 50 PNGs in one drop, each up to 30 MB, and every one becomes a page. With a Max PDF size set, each PNG becomes a JPEG page, and then 10 go in a run. For a longer document, make it in parts: the PDFs merge in any PDF reader or editor afterwards. Keeping each part under 50 pages also keeps the file easy to email.

Can I turn a PDF back into PNG images?

Not here. This converter makes PDFs from images, one page per picture; it does not take a PDF apart again. If you still have the original PNGs, keep them: they are the lossless copies, and the PDF is the easy way to send or print them as one file.
