JPG Converter

A JPG converter turns an image into a JPG, or a JPG into a modern web format. Bring PNG, WebP, AVIF and iPhone HEIC photos back to JPG, up to 10 at a time, each checked before and after. Part of the image converter.

Two jobs, one JPG converter: to JPG, or from JPG

Seven conversions arriving at one JPG converter: HEIC, WebP, PNG and AVIF to JPG, for a file every app opens, and JPG to WebP, AVIF or PNG, for smaller web files or a lossless editing copy.

"JPG converter" means opposite things to different people, so here is the split. To JPG: you have a HEIC from an iPhone, a WebP saved off a website, a heavyweight PNG or an AVIF something modern produced. You need a file that every app, form and inbox on earth opens. From JPG: you have JPGs and want smaller, modern web files (JPG to WebP or JPG to AVIF) or a lossless editing copy (JPG to PNG). The tool above does both. The cards below go deep on each pair.

Leaving JPG? The four exits, measured on one photo

DestinationSizevs sourceUse it for
AVIF (Auto)123.9 KB−79%the modern web, smallest
Recompressed JPEG (Auto)273.9 KB−53%same format, universal
WebP (Auto)218.9 KB−62%web fallback, huge support
PNG (quality 100)largest, losslessgrowsediting stops, never delivery

Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB JPEG. Same photo, four destinations. This is the decision table the pair pages expand.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

JPG vs JPEG vs JFIF vs .jpe: the rename question, settled

One 576.8 KB photo.jpg under three more names, photo.jpeg, photo.jfif and photo.jpe, the same bytes each time: renaming inside the JPEG family converts nothing, while photo.webp renamed to .jpg stays a WebP under the wrong name.

One format, four names. JPEG is the Joint Photographic Experts Group standard. JPG is the identical format spelled to fit 1990s Windows' three-letter extensions. JFIF is one wrapper a JPEG file can carry; a camera photo carries an Exif header instead, which the Exif standard puts first. .jpe is a rare extension variant. Renaming among these is completely safe and converts nothing, because there is nothing to convert. The trap: renaming works only inside this family. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg does not make a JPEG: Microsoft’s own help says a changed extension won’t convert the file, so it stays a WebP under the wrong name, and an app that trusts the name may refuse it. That is why converters exist and this page sniffs real formats instead of trusting extensions.

When JPG is the wrong destination

  • The image needs transparency?

JPEG has no alpha, so converting flattens it. PNG, WebP or AVIF carry transparency. Pick by destination.

  • Screenshots, text, line art?

JPEG smears hard edges. Keep PNG or use WebP: sharper and smaller at once.

  • It only ever lives on your website?

Skip JPG entirely. AVIF with a WebP fallback is smaller: our camera photo was 288 KB as AVIF against 605.5 KB as JPEG.

All JPG conversions

Every route in and out runs on the same engine and the same rules. Each card is its own page.

Questions, answered

Short answers specific to this page. The tool above settles most of them in a second.

Is JPG the same as JPEG? What about JFIF and .jpe?

All one format. JPEG is the standard's name. JPG is the same thing spelled for old three-letter Windows extensions. JFIF and .jpe are container and extension variants of it. Renaming any of these extensions to another is safe. Renaming is never conversion for any other format.

How do I convert an image TO JPG?

Drop your image into the converter and pick JPEG. HEIC, PNG, WebP and AVIF all convert in one pass, up to 10 files per batch with one ZIP out. JPG remains the format that everything made in the last thirty years opens without complaint. That is usually the whole point.

How do I convert JPG to another format?

Same tool, other direction. Pick AVIF or WebP for the web, or PNG at quality 100 when you need every pixel for editing. Our camera photo measured 288 KB as AVIF, 329 KB as WebP and 605.5 KB as JPEG. Each pair has its own page with measured numbers, and the pair cards route you to the right one.

Which format should I convert my JPG to for a website?

AVIF first, WebP as fallback. Measured on our 576.8 KB reference: 123.9 KB as AVIF, 218.9 KB as WebP, versus 273.9 KB just recompressing as JPEG. Serve AVIF, then WebP, in a picture element and every visitor gets the smallest file their browser decodes.

Does converting to JPG lose quality?

JPEG is lossy, so each encode costs a generation. The loss is invisible at quality 85+ for photos, visible on text and line art. The compare slider shows your file at 100% before you commit. Convert once from the best source you have, not repeatedly back and forth.

How do I convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG?

Drop them into the converter like any other file. No plugins, no desktop app. Fair warning from our measurements: HEIC is the more efficient codec, so a 343 KB HEIC became a 532.1 KB JPG at quality 90. The HEIC to JPG page covers the whole story, Windows and Mac routes included.

Can I convert a JPG to have a transparent background?

No converter can. JPEG has no alpha channel, so there is no transparency in the file to reveal. Converting JPG to PNG gives you a format that supports transparency. But making the background transparent is an editing job (background removal), not a conversion.

How do I get the converted JPG under 100 KB?

Set Max file size in Advanced settings before converting. The cap is hard, met by quality search and never overshot. You satisfy the format rule and the size rule in one pass. Upload portals with "JPG only, max 100 KB" stop being a two-tool errand.

How many JPG images can I convert at once?

Up to 10 conversions a batch, 30 MB each, mixed input formats welcome. JPGs that stay JPG compress 50 at a time. You get one ZIP out with filenames preserved. It is free, with no signup, no watermark, and a 300-image daily allowance. Every row reports its measured output size.

Does converting strip EXIF and location data?

By default, yes. Outputs ship without EXIF or GPS, which is what you want when publishing photos taken on a phone. Photographers who need the metadata can keep it with one checkbox in Advanced settings.

What happens to my files after a JPG conversion?

We keep nothing. We process your files and wipe them automatically, never archive them, never use them for anything else. No account required.
