How to compress an image to 150 KB, at or under the number

A 0 to 180 KB scale with the 150 KB cap marked: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed under it at 142.1 KB. The cap is 150,000 bytes, and the result is at or under it, never over.

Drop your image: the 150 KB cap is already armed, and the result comes back at or under 150,000 bytes, never over. EXIF and GPS come off every output, and files are wiped automatically. How the search trades quality against pixels, and the camera photo at every cap, are on the compress image to 50 KB page. Pixels the real problem? Resize image. The portal dictates the crop too? Crop image.

Compress an image under 150 KB: two real files, measured

Sources: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, and source.jpeg, 9.8 MB at 4964×2782.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

The 150 KB jobs: Google Ads banners and the ERAS residency photo

Two 150 KB rules, opposite formats: Google Ads image ads (GIF, JPG or PNG) and the ERAS photo (JPG or PNG). A headshot stays JPEG, our camera photo came back at 142.1 KB with every pixel; a text banner switches to PNG, whose palette the cap trims.

One hundred and fifty kilobytes is the ad-tech number. Google's Ads help page caps an uploaded image ad at 150 KB, in GIF, JPG or PNG. Every static banner has to clear that exact line. The second job is a headshot. The AAMC's ERAS photo page asks for a JPG or PNG of at most 150 KB. The two need opposite format advice. A headshot wants JPEG, and the budget is generous. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 142.1 KB with all 4964×2782 pixels kept. A banner is flat colour and text, which JPEG smears into halos around every letter. Switch the format picker to PNG, which Google accepts. The cap still holds: under a byte budget the engine trims the PNG's palette instead of a quality setting. A file already under 150 KB comes back untouched, unless it carries EXIF, which we strip.

8 ways forms and searches name one job, from image compressor to 150 KB and photo compressor to 150 KB to JPG 150 KB and less than 150 KB, all arriving at one page: compress to 150 KB, never over.

What does “150 KB photo size” mean?

The file’s weight on disk, not its pixels: a JPG at or under 150 KB. When a portal also rules on pixels, it states them separately, in px or cm, and the crop tool’s presets cover that rule.

Questions, answered

The cap is already armed above. One drop settles most of these.

Will the result be exactly 150 KB, or under it?

At or under, never over: that is the whole guarantee. The search maximises quality within the budget, so a result lands close beneath the cap when the image needs the room and further under when it does not. Under this page's 150 KB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 142.1 KB and our 576.8 KB reference photo at 148.9 KB. The readout under each result prints the exact bytes.

Does reducing the dimensions help an image compress to 150 KB?

Enormously: pixels are what bytes pay for. Under this 150 KB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo kept all 4964×2782 pixels and landed at 142.1 KB, so quality alone paid for the bytes. For a tight target, set Max resolution in Advanced settings yourself: it gives the quality search far more room to keep the face sharp. The engine shrinks a picture on its own only when the cap demands it.

What do "compress image in 150 KB", "compress image less than 150 KB", "150 KB converter" and "JPG 150 KB" mean?

The same thing portals ask for in their own words: a file that comes out as a JPG at or under 150 KB. This page is that converter. It preselects JPEG output, arms the 150 KB cap, and prints the exact bytes beside the result, so the words on the form and the file you upload finally agree.

What size photo does ERAS want?

The AAMC's ERAS photo page asks for a JPG, JPEG or PNG with a maximum file size of 150 KB. That is the whole byte rule, and a 150 KB cap meets it. Save the headshot as JPEG and drop it here. Our 9.8 MB camera photo fit the 150 KB cap at its full 4964×2782, so a phone headshot keeps its sharpness.

How do I get a display ad banner under Google's 150 KB limit?

Google's Ads help page sets 150 KB as the maximum for an uploaded image ad, in GIF, JPG or PNG. HTML5 and AMPHTML ads get 600 KB. Drop the banner with the cap armed. For flat colour and text, switch the output to PNG so the letters keep their edges. Under the cap the engine trims the palette instead of the quality. The result lands at or under 150,000 bytes.

What is the quality difference between 100 KB and 150 KB?

On a photo, detail you hunt for. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came out at 97.3 KB under the 100 KB cap and 142.1 KB under 150 KB, both at the full 4964×2782. The extra bytes went into cleaner edges and smoother skies, and the compare slider is where you find them. For a flat banner the difference is larger: PNG palettes step in colours, and the higher cap keeps more of them.

Can I compress a PNG to 150 KB without converting it?

Yes: pick PNG in the format picker (this page preselects JPEG) and the cap still holds. Under a byte budget the engine trims the PNG's palette instead of turning a quality setting, so a banner of flat colour and text keeps its edges exact. A photo saved as PNG is the other case: at Auto our 1.1 MB detailed photo came out at 213.1 KB as PNG against 193.2 KB as JPEG. Keep JPEG for photos.

Is 150 KB good enough for a professional headshot?

Yes, with room to spare. Our 9.8 MB camera photo kept all 4964×2782 pixels at 142.1 KB; the bytes came out of the quality setting alone, and the compare slider is where you find the difference. A headshot cropped to the portal's stated size has far fewer pixels to pay for, so the same budget buys it more quality per pixel. Keep JPEG as the output and set Max resolution if the portal gives a pixel size.

Can I compress a photo from MB to 150 KB?

Yes, without shrinking it. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 142.1 KB under this cap, about 69 times smaller, with every one of its 4964×2782 pixels kept. Files up to 30 MB are accepted per image, and 50 in a batch, up to 10 of them HEIC. The one file that needs a different move is a photo saved as PNG, which loses more to the JPEG output than to any cap.
