How to compress an image to 8 MB, at or under the number

A 0 to 9.6 MB scale with the 8 MB cap marked: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed under it at 2.6 MB. The cap is 8,000,000 bytes, and the result is at or under it, never over.

Drop your image: the 8 MB cap is already armed, and the result comes back at or under 8,000,000 bytes, never over. EXIF and GPS come off every output, and files are wiped automatically. How the search trades quality against pixels, and the camera photo at every cap, are on the compress image to 50 KB page. Pixels the real problem? Resize image. The portal dictates the crop too? Crop image.

Sources: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, and source.jpeg, 9.8 MB at 4964×2782. A file already under the cap comes back untouched: the never-larger guard.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

The 8 MB jobs: a LinkedIn profile photo, its cover and a Discord avatar

Who asks for 8 MB: LinkedIn's profile photo (PNG or JPG, at most 8 MB) and cover image (under 8 MB), and Discord's server avatar (up to 8 MB). Our camera photo is 15,050 KB as a lossless PNG, almost twice over; as a JPEG here it came to 2.6 MB.

Eight megabytes is the profile-picture number. LinkedIn's help page asks for a profile photo as a PNG or JPG of at most 8 MB, between 400 by 400 and 7680 by 4320 pixels. The cover image behind it, 1584 by 396 recommended, has to be under 8 MB too. Discord's Per-Server Profiles article allows a server avatar up to 8 MB, as a JPG, PNG or GIF. Our 9.8 MB camera photo is over the line as it comes, and the same photo weighs 15,050 KB as a lossless PNG, almost twice the limit. The cap here is 8,000,000 bytes. As a JPEG the photo came back at 2.6 MB with all 4964×2782 pixels.

What does “8 MB photo size” mean?

The file’s weight on disk, not its pixels: a JPG at or under 8 MB. When a portal also rules on pixels, it states them separately, in px or cm, and the crop tool’s presets cover that rule.

Questions, answered

The cap is already armed above. One drop settles most of these.

Will the result be exactly 8 MB, or under it?

At or under, never over: that is the whole guarantee. The search maximises quality within the budget, so a result lands close beneath the cap when the image needs the room and further under when it does not. Under this page's 8 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB, and our 576.8 KB reference photo, already under the cap, came back untouched. The readout under each result prints the exact bytes.

Does reducing the dimensions help an image compress to 8 MB?

Enormously: pixels are what bytes pay for. Under this 8 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo kept all 4964×2782 pixels and landed at 2.6 MB, so quality alone paid for the bytes. For a tight target, set Max resolution in Advanced settings yourself: it gives the quality search far more room to keep the face sharp. The engine shrinks a picture on its own only when the cap demands it.

What do "compress image in 8 MB", "compress image less than 8 MB", "8 MB converter" and "JPG 8 MB" mean?

The same thing portals ask for in their own words: a file that comes out as a JPG at or under 8 MB. This page is that converter. It preselects JPEG output, arms the 8 MB cap, and prints the exact bytes beside the result, so the words on the form and the file you upload finally agree.

What is the maximum file size for a LinkedIn profile picture?

8 MB. LinkedIn's help page asks for a PNG or JPG of at most 8 MB, between 400 by 400 and 7680 by 4320 pixels. Drop the photo here and it leaves as a JPEG under 8,000,000 bytes; our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB with every pixel. If LinkedIn still refuses it, LinkedIn's own first suggestion is to try another browser.

What size should a LinkedIn cover photo be?

LinkedIn's help page recommends 1584 by 396 pixels for the cover image behind your profile photo, as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. The shape matters more than the bytes: crop to 4:1 first and the file comes out small. A company Page is stricter, at 3 MB for every image, and the 3 MB page arms that cap.

Does the Discord 8 MB limit still apply?

Discord's 8 MB limit no longer applies to messages. Its File Attachments FAQ puts the free limit at 20 MB since August 2026. Its Nitro page (edited 29 September 2026) lists 50 MB for Nitro Basic, 1 GB for Nitro. Eight megabytes is still the server avatar limit, per Discord's Per-Server Profiles article. A file made here passes both.

Why is LinkedIn refusing my photo when it is under 8 MB?

Because bytes are one rule of three. LinkedIn also wants the photo between 400 by 400 and 7680 by 4320 pixels, as a PNG or JPG. An iPhone HEIC fails on format, and a tall photo can fail on pixels. Here HEIC leaves as a JPEG, and a Max resolution of 4320 in Advanced settings keeps both sides inside LinkedIn's box.

How do I compress an image to 8 MB without losing quality?

Let the cap decide; 8 MB is generous for a photo. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB under it with all 4964×2782 pixels, at the highest quality the search offers. When a file does have to give something, the engine keeps the most quality that fits and touches the pixels only if no quality does.

How do I compress a PNG to 8 MB?

Switch the format picker to PNG, since this page preselects JPEG, and the cap still holds. Under a budget the engine trims the PNG's palette instead of turning a quality setting. Our camera photo came to 3,721.1 KB as a 256-colour PNG at Auto, against 15,050 KB lossless, so a photo PNG fits 8 MB with room while a screenshot keeps its hard edges.
