How to compress an image to 2 MB, at or under the number

A 0 to 2.4 MB scale with the 2 MB cap marked: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed under it at 1.9 MB. The cap is 2,000,000 bytes, and the result is at or under it, never over.

Drop your image: the 2 MB cap is already armed, and the result comes back at or under 2,000,000 bytes, never over. EXIF and GPS come off every output, and files are wiped automatically. How the search trades quality against pixels, and the camera photo at every cap, are on the compress image to 50 KB page. Pixels the real problem? Resize image. The portal dictates the crop too? Crop image.

Compress an image under 2 MB: two real files, measured

Sources: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, and source.jpeg, 9.8 MB at 4964×2782. A file already under the cap comes back untouched: the never-larger guard.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

The 2 MB jobs: the WordPress upload limit, YouTube thumbnails and CEAC documents

PHP's default in php.ini, upload_max_filesize = 2M, behind the "Maximum upload file size: 2 MB" notice in WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. The same 2 MB caps YouTube phone thumbnails, Mastodon avatars, Zoom profile photos and CEAC documents.

Two megabytes is the web's default ceiling. PHP's manual lists 2M as the default for upload_max_filesize. That is where every "Maximum upload file size: 2 MB" notice in WordPress, Joomla and Drupal comes from. It is the creator's number too. YouTube's help page caps a video thumbnail uploaded from a phone at 2 MB. Mastodon's profile docs allow 2 MB each for the avatar and the header, and Zoom's support article wants a profile picture smaller than 2 MB. And it is the document number. The National Visa Center's CEAC instructions accept one JPG, JPEG or PDF per document, no larger than 2 MB. The budget is generous. Our 9.8 MB camera photo landed at 1.9 MB with all 4964×2782 pixels. The quality search alone found the fit. The 576.8 KB reference photo came back untouched. The one file that wants a different move is a big photo saved as PNG, which loses more to a format change than to any cap.

How do I get a 3 MB JPEG to 2 MB?

Drop it: the 2 MB cap is armed and JPEG output preselected, so the file comes back as a JPEG at or under 2,000,000 bytes. Our 9.8 MB camera photo landed at 1.9 MB with all 4964×2782 pixels, so a 3 MB JPEG has less to lose and gets there the same way.

8 ways forms and searches name one job, from image compressor to 2 MB and photo compressor to 2 MB to JPG 2 MB and less than 2 MB, all arriving at one page: compress to 2 MB, never over.

Image compressor to 2 MB, photo compressor to 2 MB, resize image to 2 MB, 2 MB converter, JPG 2 MB, 2 MB photo size: one job, a file at or under 2 MB. Compress image to, in, under, below or less than 2 MB: this page, with the cap armed.

What does “2 MB photo size” mean?

The file’s weight on disk, not its pixels: a JPG at or under 2 MB. When a portal also rules on pixels, it states them separately, in px or cm, and the crop tool’s presets cover that rule.

Questions, answered

The cap is already armed above. One drop settles most of these.

Will the result be exactly 2 MB, or under it?

At or under, never over: that is the whole guarantee. The search maximises quality within the budget, so a result lands close beneath the cap when the image needs the room and further under when it does not. Under this page's 2 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 1.9 MB, and our 576.8 KB reference photo, already under the cap, came back untouched. The readout under each result prints the exact bytes.

Does reducing the dimensions help an image compress to 2 MB?

Enormously: pixels are what bytes pay for. Under this 2 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo kept all 4964×2782 pixels and landed at 1.9 MB, so quality alone paid for the bytes. For a tight target, set Max resolution in Advanced settings yourself: it gives the quality search far more room to keep the face sharp. The engine shrinks a picture on its own only when the cap demands it.

What do "compress image in 2 MB", "compress image less than 2 MB", "2 MB converter" and "JPG 2 MB" mean?

The same thing portals ask for in their own words: a file that comes out as a JPG at or under 2 MB. This page is that converter. It preselects JPEG output, arms the 2 MB cap, and prints the exact bytes beside the result, so the words on the form and the file you upload finally agree.

Why does WordPress say maximum upload file size 2 MB?

Because PHP's manual sets upload_max_filesize to 2M by default, and WordPress reports what PHP allows. A host that never raised it leaves every site at 2 MB. Two fixes: ask the host to raise the limit, or bring the image under 2 MB here and upload it as it is. For photos the second is usually right. Our 9.8 MB camera photo fit the cap at 1.9 MB with every pixel kept.

How do I fix 'File is bigger than 2MB' on YouTube?

YouTube's help page caps a video thumbnail at 2 MB when you upload it from a mobile device, but allows 50 MB from a computer. So either switch to a desktop browser or bring the file under 2 MB here and upload from the phone as planned. JPEG output is preselected on the 2 MB tool; switch the picker to PNG if the thumbnail carries text you want crisp. Either way the result lands at or under 2,000,000 bytes.

Can I compress a PNG screenshot to 2 MB without converting it?

Yes. Switch the format picker to PNG, since the tool preselects JPEG, and the cap still holds. Under a byte budget the engine trims the PNG's palette, down through 256, 16, 4 and 2 colours, instead of turning a quality setting. The file stays PNG and keeps its hard edges. At Auto, our 1.1 MB detailed photo saved as PNG came out at 213.1 KB as PNG and 109.6 KB as WebP: for a photo, the format change saves more.

Why does the result stop short of 2 MB instead of landing on it?

Because quality moves in steps, and the next step up did not fit. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 1.9 MB under this cap with all 4964×2782 pixels. One quality step higher weighs more than 2 MB. A cap is a ceiling, not a target to fill. A file that lands far under it had little to lose or was already under, and the readout says which.

What is the quality difference between 1 MB and 2 MB?

Detail you hunt for with the compare slider, and past a point none at all. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came out at 996.5 KB under the 1 MB cap and 1.9 MB under 2 MB, both at the full 4964×2782. Under 3 MB the search reaches its highest quality at 2.6 MB, so any larger cap gives the same file. Pick by the rule the form states, not by the look; at these sizes both are safe.

Is 2 MB suitable for email attachments?

Yes, for a handful of photos. Gmail's help page allows 25 MB per message, so 12 photos at 2 MB each travel in one email with room for the message. For twenty or more, use the 1 MB page. Drop them all in one batch of up to 50; the ZIP comes back with every file at or under the cap and its size printed, so the total is a sum you can check before you attach.
