How to compress an image to 5 MB, at or under the number

A 0 to 6 MB scale with the 5 MB cap marked: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed under it at 2.6 MB. The cap is 5,000,000 bytes, and the result is at or under it, never over.

Drop your image: the 5 MB cap is already armed, and the result comes back at or under 5,000,000 bytes, never over. EXIF and GPS come off every output, and files are wiped automatically. How the search trades quality against pixels, and the camera photo at every cap, are on the compress image to 50 KB page. Pixels the real problem? Resize image. The portal dictates the crop too? Crop image.

Compress an image under 5 MB: two real files, measured

Sources: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, and source.jpeg, 9.8 MB at 4964×2782. A file already under the cap comes back untouched: the never-larger guard.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

The 5 MB jobs: photos on X, Google Business Profile and visa documents

Who asks for 5 MB: photos on X (up to 5 MB, GIF, JPEG or PNG), Google Business Profile photos (10 KB to 5 MB) and Australia's ImmiAccount documents (up to 5 MB each). 5,000,000 bytes here; our camera photo came back at 2.6 MB with every pixel.

Five megabytes is the social and listings number. X's help page says photos can be up to 5 MB, and it takes GIF, JPEG and PNG, not BMP or TIFF. Google Business Profile wants photos as JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB. Australia's ImmiAccount takes documents other than photos up to 5 MB each, the budget for a scanned page or a photographed certificate. The cap here is 5,000,000 bytes. A photo like ours seldom needs all of it: our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB with all 4964×2782 pixels, the search's highest quality with room to spare. The cap is for the file that does not fit, and it never lets one through over the line.

Image compressor to 5 MB, photo compressor to 5 MB, resize image to 5 MB: one page

8 ways forms and searches name one job, from image compressor to 5 MB and photo compressor to 5 MB to JPG 5 MB and less than 5 MB, all arriving at one page: compress to 5 MB, never over.

Image compressor to 5 MB, photo compressor to 5 MB, resize image to 5 MB, 5 MB converter, JPG 5 MB, 5 MB photo size: one job, a file at or under 5 MB. Compress image to, in, under, below or less than 5 MB: this page, with the cap armed.

What does “5 MB photo size” mean?

The file’s weight on disk, not its pixels: a JPG at or under 5 MB. When a portal also rules on pixels, it states them separately, in px or cm, and the crop tool’s presets cover that rule.

Questions, answered

The cap is already armed above. One drop settles most of these.

Will the result be exactly 5 MB, or under it?

At or under, never over: that is the whole guarantee. The search maximises quality within the budget, so a result lands close beneath the cap when the image needs the room and further under when it does not. Under this page's 5 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB, and our 576.8 KB reference photo, already under the cap, came back untouched. The readout under each result prints the exact bytes.

Does reducing the dimensions help an image compress to 5 MB?

Enormously: pixels are what bytes pay for. Under this 5 MB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo kept all 4964×2782 pixels and landed at 2.6 MB, so quality alone paid for the bytes. For a tight target, set Max resolution in Advanced settings yourself: it gives the quality search far more room to keep the face sharp. The engine shrinks a picture on its own only when the cap demands it.

What do "compress image in 5 MB", "compress image less than 5 MB", "5 MB converter" and "JPG 5 MB" mean?

The same thing portals ask for in their own words: a file that comes out as a JPG at or under 5 MB. This page is that converter. It preselects JPEG output, arms the 5 MB cap, and prints the exact bytes beside the result, so the words on the form and the file you upload finally agree.

How do I make a photo small enough to post on X?

Drop it here with the 5 MB cap armed. X's help page says photos can be up to 5 MB and takes GIF, JPEG and PNG only, so this page's JPEG output passes on both counts. Our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 2.6 MB with every pixel. An iPhone HEIC or a WebP converts to JPEG on the way, since X accepts neither.

What size should Google Business Profile photos be?

Google's Business Profile help asks for JPG or PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels recommended and 250 by 250 the minimum. This cap keeps a photo under 5,000,000 bytes, and the result sits far above the floor: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed at 2.6 MB. Crop it square first for the recommended shape.

How do I compress a scanned document to 5 MB?

Scan or photograph the page, then drop the image here. Australia's ImmiAccount, for one, takes documents other than photos up to 5 MB each. A page of text keeps sharper edges as a PNG, so switch the picker if the JPEG looks soft; the cap holds either way. For several pages in one file, the image to PDF tool builds the PDF.

Is 5 MB a large file for a photo?

For a JPEG it is roomy. Our 9.8 MB, 4964×2782 camera photo came back at 2.6 MB at the highest quality the search offers, about half the cap. For a lossless PNG it is tight: the same photo weighs 15,050 KB that way, three times over. So the format decides whether 5 MB is large before the cap does.

How do I compress an image to under 5 MB on a phone?

Open this page in the phone's browser and pick the photo from the gallery or Files; nothing to install. An iPhone HEIC is accepted and leaves as a JPEG, the format X, Google and ImmiAccount all take. Files up to 30 MB go in, 50 at a time with up to 10 of them HEIC, and each comes back at or under 5,000,000 bytes, upright, with EXIF and GPS stripped.

Why is my 5 MB photo still rejected?

Either the limit counts a different megabyte, or the rule is not about bytes. A checker counting 1,048,576 bytes to the megabyte passes a file made here too, since 5,000,000 bytes is under 5,242,880. Otherwise read the form again: a minimum pixel size, a square shape or a JPEG-only rule are the usual culprits, and each has its own fix.
