How to compress an image to 20 KB, at or under the number

A 0 to 24 KB scale with the 20 KB cap marked: our 9.8 MB camera photo landed under it at 16.7 KB. The cap is 20,000 bytes, and the result is at or under it, never over.

Drop your image: the 20 KB cap is already armed, and the result comes back at or under 20,000 bytes, never over. EXIF and GPS come off every output, and files are wiped automatically. How the search trades quality against pixels, and the camera photo at every cap, are on the compress image to 50 KB page. Pixels the real problem? Resize image. The portal dictates the crop too? Crop image.

Compress an image under 20 KB: two real files, measured

SourceCapResultDimensionsNote

Camera photo20 KB16.7 KB751×421quality search, then a downscale

Sources: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, and source.jpeg, 9.8 MB at 4964×2782. Where the quality search alone could not fit, the engine shrank the dimensions.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

The 20 KB jobs: signatures, thumbnails, and the strictest portals

What 20 KB is for: SSC and banking signatures of 10 to 20 KB, portal photos capped at 20 to 50 KB. A signature scanned at 236×79 fits with room to spare; our 9.8 MB camera photo needed the engine, which shrank it to 751×421.

Twenty kilobytes is the tightest cap real portals use, and it is almost always about signatures. Indian exam and government portals (SSC, banking) commonly demand a signature image of 10–20 KB, and many cap the photo at 20–50 KB. At this size, dimensions matter most. A signature scanned at the commonly demanded 236×79 fits 20 KB with room to spare. A full-resolution phone photo needs the engine to work. Drop your file and the cap does the rest. JPEG output is preselected, so you get the standard file every portal accepts.

Image compressor to 20 KB, photo compressor to 20 KB, resize image to 20 KB, 20 KB converter, JPG 20 KB, 20 KB photo size: one job, a file at or under 20 KB. Compress image to, in, under, below or less than 20 KB: this page, with the cap armed.

What does “20 KB photo size” mean?

The file’s weight on disk, not its pixels: a JPG at or under 20 KB. When a portal also rules on pixels, it states them separately, in px or cm, and the crop tool’s presets cover that rule.

Questions, answered

The cap is already armed above. One drop settles most of these.

Will the result be exactly 20 KB, or under it?

At or under, never over: that is the whole guarantee. The search maximises quality within the budget, so a result lands close beneath the cap when the image needs the room and further under when it does not. Under this page's 20 KB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo came back at 16.7 KB and our 576.8 KB reference photo at 18.3 KB. The readout under each result prints the exact bytes.

Does reducing the dimensions help an image compress to 20 KB?

Enormously: pixels are what bytes pay for. Under this 20 KB cap our 9.8 MB camera photo had to come down from 4964×2782 to 751×421 before any quality level fit, and landed at 16.7 KB. For a tight target, set Max resolution in Advanced settings yourself: it gives the quality search far more room to keep the face sharp. The engine shrinks a picture on its own only when the cap demands it.

What do "compress image in 20 KB", "compress image less than 20 KB", "20 KB converter" and "JPG 20 KB" mean?

The same thing portals ask for in their own words: a file that comes out as a JPG at or under 20 KB. This page is that converter. It preselects JPEG output, arms the 20 KB cap, and prints the exact bytes beside the result, so the words on the form and the file you upload finally agree.

Why does my signature upload keep getting rejected at 20 KB?

Usually dimensions, not compression. Portals often pair the KB cap with a pixel range: 140×60 and 236×79 are the common signature specs. Crop your signature tight and keep it on white paper. Let the 20 KB cap handle the bytes, and check the portal's stated pixel range before you upload.

Can any image reach 20 KB?

Any photo can. The engine shrinks dimensions when quality alone cannot get there, and a 64-pixel floor is the only hard stop. Whether 20 KB still looks good depends on the subject. A signature or simple photo holds up. A detailed group photo at 20 KB is legible, not beautiful.

What about caps below 10 KB?

The size field starts at 10 KB. Below that, honest output quality collapses for anything photographic. A sub-10 KB demand is rare, and usually a signature. For those, crop tight and shrink dimensions first with the resize tool. Then apply the smallest cap.

Can I compress an image to 20 KB without losing quality?

Not without losing some: a 20 KB cap is a quality decision, and the engine makes it the smallest the number allows. Our 576.8 KB reference photo came down to 576×384 at 18.3 KB. Our 9.8 MB camera photo had to come down to 751×421 before any quality level fit, and landed at 16.7 KB. A signature on white paper has far fewer pixels than either, so it keeps its edges. The compare slider shows what the budget cost.

How do I resize an image to 20 KB?

Resizing changes pixels; a cap changes bytes, and "resize to 20 KB" almost always means the bytes. Drop the file and the armed cap does that. The engine shrinks the frame only when no quality level fits, which is what happened to our 9.8 MB camera photo: it came back at 751×421. To pick the pixels yourself, set Max resolution or crop to the form's stated size first, and the cap spends the whole budget on the smaller frame.

How do I compress a signature to 20 KB?

Crop to the ink, keep the paper white, then drop it. A 140×60 signature, the size IBPS's guidelines prefer, holds 8,400 pixels, a fraction of our 576.8 KB reference photo's 1920×1280, and that photo fit 20 KB at 18.3 KB, scaled to 576×384. The cap leaves the strokes sharp. One check first: "10 to 20 KB" is a window with a floor, and a result far under it can fail. Type 15 as the Max file size to land mid-window.
