Banner sizes for web, email, ads and every network
The right banner size depends on where the banner runs. Web ads come in fixed sizes such as 300 × 250 and 728 × 90. An email banner is 600 pixels wide, and a website banner spans your layout. We read Google’s, the IAB’s and Mailchimp’s pages on 4 October 2026, then saved one banner at every size. Part of the social media image resizer.

What are the standard banner sizes?
The standard banner sizes come from the place a banner runs. An ad network, an email platform and a social network each fix their own. A website has no standard size, because its layout decides.
| Place | Common size | Set by | File limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web ad, medium rectangle | 300 × 250 | Google and the IAB | 150 KB |
| Web ad, leaderboard | 728 × 90 | Google and the IAB | 150 KB |
| Web ad, mobile banner | 320 × 50 | Google and the IAB | 150 KB (the IAB: 50 KB) |
| 600 pixels wide | Mailchimp Help | 1 MB, recommended | |
| Website | Your layout’s width | Your theme | None set |
| Social network banner | 680 × 240 to 2560 × 1440 | Each network | Each network’s own |
Printed banners are measured in feet
A printed banner is sized in feet or inches, so its pixels depend on the print resolution. 4over4’s banner guide asks for artwork at 150 DPI at full size. That suits a banner read from 10 feet or more. Up close, the guide asks for 300 DPI. At 150 DPI, a 2 × 4 foot banner needs 3,600 × 7,200 pixels.
Website banner size: as wide as your layout
A website banner has no standard size, because your theme or page builder sets its frame. A full-width banner spans the browser window. So make it at least 1920 pixels wide, the width of a Full HD screen. StatCounter’s figures for September 2026 put 1920 × 1080 first among desktop screens, at 28.07%.
The height is your choice. We made ours 1920 × 600, a 16:5 strip that leaves the page below in view. Blinkimg’s engine at Auto saved it as a JPG of 82.9 KB. The WebP was 48.6 KB and the AVIF 39.5 KB.
On your own site you pick the format, so a WebP or an AVIF can carry the banner. Ads and emails give you less choice: neither Google’s ad specifications nor Mailchimp’s help names WebP or AVIF.
Banner ad sizes Google and the IAB list
Banner ad sizes come from two lists: Google’s sizes for uploaded image ads, and the IAB’s fixed-size units. Eight sizes are on both.
Google’s 20 sizes
Google Ads takes an uploaded image ad at 20 sizes, its uploaded display ads specifications say. They fall into four groups, from the 300 × 50 mobile banner to the 300 × 1050 portrait. Each file must be a GIF, JPG or PNG of 150 KB or less. Its regional table ties 980 × 120 and 250 × 360 to Sweden, 930 × 180 to Denmark and 580 × 400 to Norway. It also adds 3 billboards, 750 pixels wide, for Poland only.

The most common web banner size
The most common web banner size is 300 × 250 pixels, first on Google’s list for computers. That list, on its help page on responsive display ads, names 9 sizes. After 300 × 250 come 336 × 280, 728 × 90, 970 × 90, 468 × 60, 300 × 600, 160 × 600, 250 × 250 and 200 × 200.
The same page’s list for phones starts with 300 × 200, 300 × 50 and 300 × 100. Two of those, 300 × 200 and 300 × 100, are not on the upload list. A responsive display ad covers them instead.
The IAB’s fixed sizes
The IAB’s New Standard Ad Unit Portfolio recommends fixed-size banner units as well. It chose them from a study of which units “contribute to the majority of revenue”. Each unit has a first-load weight limit, up to 250 KB for the billboard and the portrait.
The IAB counts that weight after gzip compression, and works out each unit’s pixels at 2x, double density. Of the IAB’s banners for computers and smartphones, only its 120 × 60 unit is missing from Google’s list.
What is the right email banner size?
The right email banner size is 600 pixels wide, the width Mailchimp’s templates are built for. Its help page on template images says they are “generally designed for a maximum width of 600 pixels”. Mind the padding: with 10 pixels on each side, Mailchimp says to make a header image 580 pixels wide.
Mailchimp gives no height. We made ours 600 × 200, a 3:1 strip that keeps the message near the top. Mailchimp also advises full-sized images over shrunk ones, so they stay sharp on retina screens. So we rendered the same banner at twice the pixels, 1200 × 400.
| Banner | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| 600 × 200 | 15.9 KB | 44.3 KB |
| 1200 × 400 | 43.2 KB | 139.4 KB |
Save a photo banner as a JPG. The PNG came out about 3 times larger at both sizes. Even the 1200 × 400 PNG, at 139.4 KB, sat far under the 1 MB Mailchimp recommends.
Banner sizes on X, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Discord
Every social network sets its own banner size and shape, from 16:9 on YouTube to near 6:1 on LinkedIn. Each figure comes from the network’s own help page, read on 2 October 2026. Our social media image sizes cheat sheet lists every other placement.
| Network | Banner | Size | Shape | File limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X | Header | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 | Not stated |
| Profile banner | 1584 × 396 | 4:1 | Under 8 MB | |

| YouTube | Channel banner | 2560 × 1440 (at least 2048 × 1152) | 16:9 | 6 MB |
| Discord | Server banner | 960 × 540 | 16:9 | Not stated |
| Discord | Profile banner (Nitro) | At least 680 × 240 | 17:6 | Under 10 MB |
Each of these banners has a page that crops a picture to it:
YouTube’s banner also has a small safe area for text. Our post on what size is a YouTube thumbnail draws it.
Will your banner fit under 150 KB?
Our photo banner fit under Google’s cap at every ad size, even at a high quality. The largest file we saved, the 300 × 1050 portrait, came to 82.8 KB. That is 55% of the cap.
How we tested
We cropped our 9.8 MB camera photo to each size. A dark band carries the words “Summer at the Lake”. Chromium set the words in Inter at the largest size that fits. Blinkimg’s engine saved each render as a JPG, with Max file size at 150 KB. The IAB’s 120 × 60 got its own 50 KB.

A PNG passed too, because the engine’s PNG keeps 256 colours. The largest PNG, 300 × 1050, reached 79.2 KB.
Stricter and looser limits
The IAB is stricter at the small end. Its smartphone banner gets 50 KB at first load, a third of Google’s cap. Our 320 × 50 came to 10.2 KB.
Most social banners have looser limits, in megabytes, as the network table shows. The Facebook cover is the tight one. Our cheat sheet cropped the same photo to 851 × 315. That JPG was 28.7 KB, inside the size Meta says loads fastest.

Questions
- What is the most common banner size?
- The 300 × 250 medium rectangle heads Google's list of the most common ad sizes on computers, ahead of 336 × 280 and 728 × 90. Google calls it the inline rectangle, and the IAB lists it too, with a 150 KB first load.
- Does a banner have a default size?
- A banner has no single default size, because each place sets its own. Ad networks list fixed sizes, email platforms set a width, and each social network sets one banner shape. A website banner follows its theme. To start somewhere, use 300 × 250 for a web ad and 600 pixels wide for an email.
- What are the standard Google ad sizes for 2026?
- Google's page on uploaded display ads lists 20 image sizes, from the 300 × 50 mobile banner to the 300 × 1050 portrait. They fall into four groups: squares and rectangles, skyscrapers, leaderboards and mobile. Three more billboards, 750 pixels wide, run in Poland only. Each image may weigh 150 KB at most.
- What is the size of a 970 × 90 ad?
- A 970 × 90 ad is 970 pixels wide and 90 pixels tall. That strip is almost 11 times wider than it is high. Google calls it the large leaderboard. The IAB calls it the super leaderboard or pushdown and allows 200 KB at first load, so Google's 150 KB cap is the tighter one.
- What size is a mobile banner ad?
- A mobile banner ad is 320 × 50 or 300 × 50 pixels, and Google names both "Mobile banner". Its large mobile banner is 320 × 100. The IAB caps a smartphone banner at 50 KB at first load. Our 320 × 50 banner held its headline at only 17 pixels, so keep the words few.
- What is the recommended size for an email banner?
- An email banner should be 600 pixels wide, the most Mailchimp's templates are designed for. With 10 pixels of padding on each side, Mailchimp says to make the image 580 wide. For sharp phone screens, upload twice the pixels, 1200 wide. Keep each image under the 1 MB Mailchimp recommends.
- How tall should an email banner be?
- An email banner can be any height, because Mailchimp's help gives only a width. Keep it short, so the message starts near the top of the screen. Our test banner was 600 × 200, a 3:1 strip, and Blinkimg's engine saved it as a 15.9 KB JPG at Auto.
- What is the recommended size for a website header banner?
- A website header banner has no recommended size, because your theme sets its frame. A full-width banner should be at least 1920 pixels wide, the width of a Full HD screen. We made ours 1920 × 600. Blinkimg's engine at Auto saved it at 82.9 KB as a JPG and 48.6 KB as a WebP.
- How big is a 36 × 72 banner?
- A 36 × 72 banner is 36 by 72 inches, which is 3 by 6 feet, a printed vinyl size. A print shop measures it in inches, so its pixels depend on the DPI. At 150 DPI, the resolution 4over4 asks for at full size, the artwork needs 5,400 × 10,800 pixels.
- Should a banner be a JPG or a PNG?
- Save a photo banner as a JPG. At Auto, Blinkimg's engine saved our 300 × 250 photo banner as an 11.6 KB JPG and a 29.0 KB PNG. Mailchimp's advice is JPEG for photographs and PNG for graphics with transparency. Google Ads and Mailchimp accept both formats.
- How do I make a banner under 150 KB?
- Open Advanced settings, set Max file size to 150 KB and save the banner as a JPG. Blinkimg's engine then keeps the highest quality that fits. All 24 of our banners settled at quality 95, and the largest used 55% of the cap. If you want the smallest file instead, leave the quality on Auto.
- Can one banner work on every social network?
- One banner file cannot fit every social network, because each sets its own shape. The X header is 3:1, the LinkedIn profile banner 4:1 and the YouTube channel banner 16:9. A Facebook Page cover is 851 × 315. Crop one copy per network from the same large original.
- What does the IAB say about banner sizes?
- The IAB's New Standard Ad Unit Portfolio recommends fixed banner sizes. It chose them by which units earn most of the revenue. The 300 × 250, 728 × 90 and 160 × 600 each get a 150 KB first load. The 970 × 250 billboard gets 250 KB. It counts file weight after gzip compression.
