Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.
Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. What is the LinkedIn banner size?
1584 × 396 pixels, as a JPG or PNG file under 8 MB.
LinkedIn’s help page on adding or changing the cover image on your profile lists exactly those three things: a JPG or PNG file, less than 8 MB, 1584 (w) × 396 (h) pixels recommended. Its page on photos that will not upload repeats 1584 × 396 as the recommended pixel dimensions for the background photo, beside the profile photo’s own rules. Every ranking tool prints the 1584 × 396 and stops; the 8 MB limit and the JPG-or-PNG rule are the two things that get an upload refused, and they are on the same page. The company Page cover has a different size: 1512 × 256 pixels, a PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB, according to LinkedIn’s article on image specifications for Pages. The same article gives a custom image in a Page post as 1200 × 627, a 1.91:1 shape, more than 200 pixels wide. Type either size into the Custom size box with the sides unlinked.

4:1 is a strip: what does a photo lose as a LinkedIn banner?
Most of its height.
1584 × 396 is exactly 4:1, so a full-width crop keeps 38 percent of a 3:2 photo’s height, 33 percent of a 4:3 phone photo’s, and 19 percent of a portrait’s. That is why the page opens on Crop with the frame ready to slide: the strip you pick is the whole banner, and the default middle strip is rarely the best one. Sky above a skyline, a desk, a texture, the horizon of a landscape, a row of a bookshelf all make a strip; a face rarely does, because a head is taller than a strip is. Pull a corner of the frame to take a narrower slice of the photo when the composition needs it; the export is still 1584 × 396. The Crop / Fit switch under the tiles offers the other route. Fit puts the whole photo inside the strip on a fill colour, which for a 3:2 photo means bands of 495 pixels at each side and a small picture in the middle. That suits a logo or lettering on a matching fill and little else.

Why does my profile photo cover part of the banner?
Because LinkedIn draws the profile photo over the banner rather than beside it.
LinkedIn’s help pages state the sizes and say nothing about the position; the guides put the overlap at the lower left on a computer and nearer the middle in the app, and the two do not agree with each other. The safe layout does not depend on either: keep faces, a name and any words in the upper half of the strip and right of centre, treat the lower left as lost, and look at your own profile on a computer and in the app after uploading. If the photo hides something, come back, slide the frame or move the subject, and save again; the export is exact every time, so the second upload replaces the first without a change of size.

Why is my LinkedIn banner blurry?
Because the source was smaller than the banner.
An exact-size preset exports 1584 × 396 whatever you drop, so a photo or a screenshot narrower than 1584 pixels is enlarged to reach it, and enlargement is what reads as blur. Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo is the safe case: its 4:1 strip is 1920 × 480, wider than the banner, so the measured row above scales it down to 1584 × 396, so no pixel has to be invented. A crop of a small region of a large photo is the same thing by another route. Start from the original file, at least 1584 wide, and save once: the export is exact, optimised once, and a flat design with text stays crisp as a PNG from the format picker. Our reference photo came back at 119.3 KB at 1584 × 396 through the engine at its defaults, a long way under LinkedIn’s 8 MB, so the byte limit is never the reason to shrink the picture.

What is the LinkedIn profile picture size?
A square between 400 × 400 and 7680 × 4320 pixels, as a PNG or JPG file no larger than 8 MB, with no GIF.
Those are the four rules on LinkedIn’s help page for a photo that will not upload to your profile, and a refused photo has broken one of them. Press the 1:1 tile, then type 400 into the Custom size box with the link on for the smallest allowed square, and drag the square over the face with room around it, because the picture is shown as a circle and the corners go. A larger square is better when the source has the pixels; 1000 × 1000 sits well inside the range and stays sharp when the photo is opened large. Save and upload the full square; LinkedIn draws the circle.

What file type and size does LinkedIn allow?
JPG or PNG, under 8 MB, for the banner; PNG or JPG, under 8 MB, no GIF, for the profile photo.
The format is the rule people trip on, not the size. A WebP or an AVIF export is smaller than either and is not among the types the pages allow. Leave the format picker on JPEG for a photo and on PNG for flat art with text, and skip the other two for this upload. The size is generous. A 1584 × 396 JPEG from here weighs a fraction of the limit, and a photo that arrives over 8 MB is one that never went through an export at all. Set Max file size in Advanced settings if you want the number guaranteed; the 1 MB chip is plenty.

When is the banner preset the wrong tool?
A company Page cover?
LinkedIn's Pages article gives 1512 × 256, a PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB. Unlink the sides and type that size into the Custom size box.
A Page post image?
LinkedIn's Pages article gives 1200 × 627 at 1.91:1, more than 200 pixels wide. Unlink the sides and type that size into the Custom size box.
The source is narrower than 1,584 pixels?
The preset enlarges it and it looks soft. Find a larger copy or a different photo.
The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.
Q:What size is a LinkedIn banner?
1584 × 396 pixels, the size LinkedIn's help page on adding or changing the cover image on your profile recommends, as a JPG or PNG file under 8 MB. Its page on photos that will not upload repeats 1584 × 396 for the background photo. That is a 4:1 strip, four times as wide as it is tall.
Q:How do I resize a photo for LinkedIn?
Drop it into the LinkedIn banner resizer. The editor opens with the LinkedIn tile pressed, a 1584 × 396 frame drawn over the picture; drag the frame to the strip you want and tap Save. The export is exactly 1584 × 396, JPEG or PNG, optimised once and well under 8 MB. For the profile photo, type a square of 400 or more instead.
Q:Which website can I use to resize images for LinkedIn?
Any editor that exports an exact size will do; the numbers matter more than the tool. LinkedIn's help pages ask for 1584 × 396 for the banner and a square between 400 × 400 and 7680 × 4320 for the profile photo, both JPG or PNG under 8 MB. This one opens on the banner size, keeps a 4:1 crop exact and compresses the file once.
Q:What is the LinkedIn profile picture size?
Between 400 × 400 and 7680 × 4320 pixels, according to LinkedIn's help page on photos that will not upload, as a PNG or JPG under 8 MB; GIFs are not supported. Press the 1:1 tile, then type 400 into the Custom size box, keep the face in the middle with room around it, save, and upload the full square.
Q:Why is my LinkedIn banner blurry?
Usually because the source was narrower than 1584 pixels and got enlarged to fill the banner, or because a small part of a large photo was cropped and then enlarged. A file compressed several times looks the same. Start from the original, crop the strip at 1584 × 396, and save once: the export is exact, and PNG from the format picker keeps a flat design crisp.
Q:Why does my profile photo cover part of the banner?
Because LinkedIn lays the profile photo over the banner; the help pages state the sizes and not the position, and the guides put the overlap at the lower left on a computer and nearer the middle in the app. Keep faces and words in the upper half and right of centre, upload, then look at the profile on both, and move the frame here if anything is hidden.
Q:What file size and type does LinkedIn allow?
A JPG or PNG file under 8 MB for the banner, from LinkedIn's cover image help page, and a PNG or JPG under 8 MB for the profile photo, with no GIF, from its photo upload page. 8 MB is generous: our reference photo came back at 119.3 KB at 1584 × 396. Pick JPEG or PNG in the format picker rather than WebP or AVIF.
Q:What is the LinkedIn company page banner size?
1512 × 256 pixels, according to LinkedIn's help article on image specifications for Pages and Career Pages, as a PNG or JPEG of 3 MB at most. LinkedIn changed it from 4200 × 700 in August 2026. Keep key details away from the edges, above all the lower-right corner. Unlink the sides, type 1512 × 256 into the Custom size box, drag the frame, and save.
Q:What is the LinkedIn post image size?
1200 × 627 pixels, a 1.91:1 shape, for a custom image in a Page post, according to LinkedIn's help article on image specifications for Pages and Career Pages; the image must be more than 200 pixels wide. Unlink the sides, type 1200 × 627 into the Custom size box, drag the frame over the picture, and save.
Q:Which LinkedIn size fits a banner, 1584 × 396 or 1536 × 768?
1584 × 396, the figure on LinkedIn's cover image and photo upload help pages. 1536 × 768, on some tool pages beside it, is unsourced and 2:1, so a design made at it loses half its height when cut to 4:1. 1200 × 628 is close to LinkedIn's 1200 × 627 for a Page post image, a different placement.
Q:Is the LinkedIn cover picture size the same as the banner size?
Yes. Cover image, background photo and banner are three names for the one wide picture at the top of a profile. LinkedIn's help page on the cover image recommends 1584 × 396 pixels, a JPG or PNG file under 8 MB, and its page on photos that will not upload repeats 1584 × 396 for the background photo.
Q:What does the LinkedIn banner look like on mobile?
LinkedIn's help pages state one size, 1584 × 396, and no separate mobile figure. A phone screen is narrower, and the guides describe a tighter view with the profile photo over a different part of the strip. One rule serves both screens: keep what matters in the middle and upper half, and check your own profile in the app after uploading. Move the frame here and save again if the edges matter.
Q:Can I resize a LinkedIn banner without cropping?
Yes, with the Crop / Fit control under the tiles set to Fit. The whole photo sits inside 1584 × 396 on a fill colour: a 3:2 photo gets bands of 495 pixels at each side, so the photo becomes a small picture in the middle of a wide strip. That suits a logo or lettering on a matching fill; for a photograph a well-placed crop looks far better.
Q:Do you keep my LinkedIn banner?
No. We keep nothing: files are processed and wiped automatically, never archived and never used for anything else. Saving strips EXIF metadata, GPS location included, so the banner you upload carries no record of where it was taken. There is no account, no watermark and no charge for the resize.
