Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. What is 1024 × 576 used for?

A 16:9 frame 1,024 pixels wide: the start frame of Stable Video Diffusion, the Large copy WordPress makes of a wide photo, and the number in YouTube’s banner upload error.

Where 1024 × 576 is asked for: Stable Video Diffusion, Zeroscope XL, PAL square-pixel frame, WordPress Large copy, YouTube banner upload error. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Stability AI trained Stable Video Diffusion XT on 576x1024 frames, and its API takes 1024x576, 768x768 and 576x1024; the Zeroscope XL video model “works best at 1024x576”. The ITU-R BT.1358 standard lists 1024 × 576 as the square-pixel 16:9 frame of 576-line video. WordPress’s Large size is 1024 × 1024 at most, so a 16:9 upload gets a 1024 × 576 copy, and Discord’s server banner floor of 960 × 540 at 16:9 sits just under it.

It is the number in the upload error, not the size YouTube documents.

Three 16:9 banner sizes to one scale: 1024 × 576, the number in YouTube's upload error; 2048 × 1152, the minimum YouTube Help and the Data API document; 2560 × 1440, the size YouTube recommends. 1024 × 576 has a quarter of the documented minimum's pixels.

Creators have posted the message for years: “Your image dimension is smaller than the minimum supported of 1024 x 576 px.” YouTube’s help page and its Data API both give the banner’s minimum as 2048 × 1152 at 16:9 and recommend 2560 × 1440, up to 6 MB. A 1024 × 576 file clears the error with 25 percent of the documented minimum’s pixels, and it shows soft on a TV. Make the banner at 2560 × 1440 on the YouTube banner page, where the safe area is marked.

Answered

What size does Stable Video Diffusion want, and why does my photo look squeezed?

1024 × 576 for a wide video, and a photo of another shape must be cropped first.

A 4:3 photo on its way to a 1024 × 576 Stable Video Diffusion frame: cropped to 16:9 first, every shape kept; or squeezed by a plain resize, circles turned oval, which is what image.resize((1024, 576)) does to a picture that is not 16:9.

The Diffusers documentation loads the start image and runs image.resize((1024, 576)), a plain resize that squeezes any picture that is not already 16:9. Crop it to 16:9 here first, or fit it on a fill, and the resize has nothing left to squeeze. OpenAI’s image models cannot make this size directly: their custom sizes need at least 655,360 pixels, and 1024 × 576 has 589,824. Generate larger, then resize here.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 1024 × 576 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 1024 × 576: Crop keeps a 16:9 slice, 84% of its height; Fit keeps the whole picture at 864 × 576 with a 80 pixel band of fill on each side.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 1024 × 576 is 16:9, wider than the photo, so the top and the bottom give. Crop keeps 84 percent of the photo’s height and its full width; drag the frame up or down to the part that matters. Fit keeps the whole picture at 864 × 576 inside the frame, with a 80-pixel band of fill on each side.

Stretching would pull the picture to 1024 × 576 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 1024 × 576 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 1024 × 576 to one scale: cropped to 16:9 it is 1920 × 1080, which the export scales down to 53% to reach 1024 × 576.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 16:9, is 1920 × 1080; the export scaled it to 53 percent of that, to 1024 × 576, in one pass: 95.2 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 1024 × 576 image?

AVIF, at 46.7 KB for our reference photo at 1024 × 576.

The reference photo at 1024 × 576 in four formats, measured: AVIF 46.7 KB, WebP 86 KB, JPEG 95.2 KB, PNG 297.1 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 1024 × 576 crop came to 86 KB as WebP and 95.2 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 297.1 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 1024 × 576 is the wrong size

  • A YouTube channel banner?

YouTube documents 2048 × 1152 as the minimum; the banner page opens on 2560 × 1440 with the safe area.

  • An HD video frame?

1280 × 720 is 720p; its page opens on it.

  • A vertical frame?

Stable Video Diffusion also takes 576 × 1024; type it into Custom size with the sides unlinked.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

Is 1024x576 the YouTube banner size?

No. YouTube's help page gives the banner's minimum as 2048 × 1152 and recommends 2560 × 1440, up to 6 MB. 1024 × 576 is the number in the upload error some creators see, and a file that size has a quarter of the documented minimum's pixels. The YouTube banner page opens on 2560 × 1440 with the safe area marked.

What aspect ratio is 1024x576?

16:9. Divide both sides by 64 and you get 16 by 9, the shape of a widescreen TV and of YouTube's player. 1024 × 576 is that shape 1,024 pixels wide, between 960 × 540 and 1280 × 720 on the same ladder, so an image cropped for one scales to the others without a second crop.

Is 1024x576 HD?

No. HD starts at 1280 × 720, which YouTube lists as 720p (HD). 1024 × 576 has 589,824 pixels, 64 percent of 720p and 28 percent of Full HD's 1920 × 1080. It is the square-pixel frame of 576-line standard definition video.

How do I resize an image to 1024x576 without cropping?

Press Fit once the editor opens. The whole picture scales to stand inside the frame: our 3:2 reference photo sits at 864 × 576 with a 80-pixel band of fill on each side, white unless you pick a colour. Nothing is cut and nothing is stretched, and Save exports exactly 1024 × 576.

What is the difference between 1024x576 and 1280x720?

Only the size: both are 16:9. 1280 × 720 has 1.56 times the pixels and is the 720p HD frame YouTube lists. 1024 × 576 is what Stable Video Diffusion takes and what WordPress's Large copy of a 16:9 photo becomes. Where a form checks the pixels, make each at its exact number; they are not interchangeable.

Why does WordPress save a 1024x576 copy of my image?

Because WordPress's default Large size is 1024 pixels at most on each side, kept in proportion, so a 16:9 photo becomes 1024 × 576. WordPress names the copy with its size, as in photo-1024x576.jpg. Change the Large size under Settings > Media; photos you uploaded before keep the copies WordPress already made.

Can I use a 1024x576 image as a YouTube thumbnail?

Yes. YouTube's minimum thumbnail width is 640 pixels and the shape is 16:9, so a 1024 × 576 image uploads. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160, which holds far more detail on a large screen; the thumbnail page opens on YouTube's numbers and quotes its help page.
