In pixels
What is A4 size in pixels at 300 DPI?
2480 × 3508 pixels, and this page exports exactly that.
A4 is 210 × 297 mm under ISO 216; the pixels are millimetres times the dots per inch divided by 25.4, each side rounded on its own. The table is that one sum at every resolution a form or a printer might name.

What is A4 in cm and inches?
21.0 × 29.7 cm, or 8.27 × 11.69 inches, from the 210 × 297 mm definition in ISO 216.
The ratio is 1:1.41, the width to the height, which is 1 to the square root of 2: fold the sheet in half across its long side and the half has the same shape, which is how A3, A4 and A5 nest inside one another. That property is why the preset locks the frame to the ratio rather than to a loose portrait: a crop that is nearly A4 leaves a sliver of margin on the print, and a true 1:1.41 does not. The spec card above prints the size in pixels, millimetres and inches so it matches whichever unit your form or printer uses.
Crop or fit
Resize an image to A4 by cropping, or fit it on the page: which do I want?
Crop when the page should be full and the edges can go; Fit when every pixel has to stay and bands are acceptable.
Both export exactly 2480 × 3508. The switch sits in the Size presets panel.
1
Crop: the page cut from the picture
Pressed on arrival. A 1:1.41 frame, the largest the picture holds, that you drag over the part that matters and scale from a corner. The export is what the frame encloses, resampled to 2480 × 3508, the print filled edge to edge. Right for a photo going on the wall.
2
Fit: the whole picture on the page
Press Fit. The picture is scaled to touch two edges of the 2480 × 3508 page and the rest is a fill colour: white, black, grey, or any colour from the well. Nothing is cut. Right for a scan, a certificate, a drawing or a screenshot that a form wants on an A4 page.

How do I fit a photo on an A4 page without cropping?
Switch Crop to Fit in the Size presets panel and the whole photo sits inside the 2480 × 3508 page on a fill, nothing cut.
The crop handles disappear, because there is nothing to choose: the picture is scaled until two of its edges touch the page, and the bands fill the rest in the colour you pick. A landscape photo on the portrait page gets wide bands above and below; for a landscape page, unlink the sides, type 297 and 210 into Custom size with the unit on mm and Apply, and the bands shrink to whatever the two shapes disagree by. The fill is part of the export, so a white fill prints as white paper and a coloured one as a border.

How do I make an A4 image into a PDF?
Save the image here, then drop it on the Image to PDF converter, which puts every image on an A4 sheet: scaled until it touches two edges, centred, the sheet turned to match a landscape image.
An image already at A4’s 1:1.41 shape fills the sheet edge to edge, so cropping or fitting to A4 first is what decides how the page looks. A picture fitted here with a white fill arrives as a page with the picture inside it and nothing cut. The JPEG bytes go into the PDF as they are, so a 2480 × 3508 export keeps its pixels on the page. Several images dropped together become the pages of one PDF, in order.
File size
What does an A4 image weigh?
623.1 KB as a JPEG at 2480 × 3508 from our 576.8 KB reference photo, larger than its source: its 905 × 1280 centre crop was enlarged 2.7 times to fill the page, and the encoder spends bytes on every new pixel.

A camera photo has the pixels the page needs, so nothing is invented; the readout under the row prints its figure. When an upload states a ceiling, type it into Max file size and the export comes back at or under it; the readout under the row prints the exact size.

Is A4 the same as Letter size?
No. Letter, the North American sheet, is 216 × 279 mm, or 8.5 × 11 inches: wider and shorter than A4’s 210 × 297 mm, with a different ratio.
An A4 image sent to a Letter printer is either shrunk to fit, leaving margins on the sides, or trimmed at the top and bottom. A4 is the sheet in India, the UK and Europe; the US prints on Letter. For a Letter page, unlink the sides and type 8.5 and 11 into Custom size with the unit on in, which the panel converts to 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, and crop or fit to that instead. The same switch, the same fill, a different sheet.
Answered
Does resizing to A4 change the print quality?
Only when the source has fewer pixels than the page needs, and then the export is an enlargement.
A sharp print at 300 DPI needs 2480 × 3508 pixels; a camera photo of 4964 × 2782, our camera reference, holds a portrait A4 crop of at most 1967 × 2782, which the export enlarges 1.26 times, and holds a landscape A4 with pixels to spare. So a landscape photo prints sharper on a landscape page. A small image, a screenshot or a web download, becomes soft at A4 whatever the tool, because the pixels are invented. The compare view shows the export at full zoom before you download, so you see the softness before the printer does.
Be sure first
When the A4 preset is the wrong tool
A PDF page, not an image?
The Image to PDF converter lays any image on an A4 sheet by itself; resize here first only when the crop or the fill matters.
A Letter page?
Unlink the sides and type 8.5 and 11 into Custom size with the unit on in; the frame and the fill work the same way on that sheet.
A scan that must shrink for an upload?
The size pages cap the bytes without touching the sheet; type the ceiling into Max file size here or use their pages.
A size in centimetres that is not a paper size?
Unlink the sides and type it into Custom size with the unit on cm; the resize-in-cm page opens on 10 × 15 cm and explains the conversion.
The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.
Q:What is A4 size in pixels at 300 DPI?
2480 × 3508 pixels, which is what the editor exports. A4 is 210 × 297 mm under ISO 216, and pixels are millimetres times the dots per inch divided by 25.4, each side rounded: 210 ÷ 25.4 × 300 is 2480.3. 300 DPI is the print resolution a photo printer or a print shop assumes, so it is the figure to use when the page will be printed.
Q:What is A4 size in pixels at 72 DPI and 150 DPI?
595 × 842 pixels at 72 DPI and 1240 × 1754 at 150 DPI, the same 210 × 297 mm sheet at a screen resolution and at a draft print resolution. At 96 DPI it is 794 × 1123, and at 600 DPI 4961 × 7016. The sheet never changes; only how many pixels stand in for each inch. Type any of them into Custom size as px when a form names that figure.
Q:How do I resize an image to A4 without stretching it?
Drop it and choose Crop or Fit. Crop, pressed on arrival, locks a 1:1.41 frame you drag over the part that matters, and the export resamples what is inside it to 2480 × 3508. Fit keeps the whole picture inside 2480 × 3508 on a fill colour, with bands where the shapes differ. Neither stretches: stretching comes from a plain resize box, and the frame here belongs to the page, not the picture.
Q:How do I fit a photo on an A4 page without cropping?
Switch Crop to Fit in the Size presets panel. The whole photo sits inside the 2480 × 3508 page, scaled to touch two edges, and the rest is a fill colour: white, black, grey or any colour from the well. Nothing is cut. A landscape photo on the portrait page gets bands above and below; for a landscape page, unlink the sides and type 297 and 210 into Custom size with the unit on mm.
Q:What is A4 in cm and inches?
21.0 × 29.7 cm, or 8.27 × 11.69 inches, from the 210 × 297 mm definition in ISO 216. The sheet's ratio is 1:1.41, which is 1 to the square root of 2: fold it in half and the half has the same shape, which is how A3, A4 and A5 nest. Whichever unit the form or the printer uses, it is the same sheet.
Q:Is A4 the same as Letter size?
No. Letter, the North American sheet, is 216 × 279 mm (8.5 × 11 inches): wider and shorter than A4's 210 × 297 mm. An A4 image printed on Letter is shrunk or trimmed at the top and bottom. For a US printer, unlink the sides and type 8.5 and 11 into Custom size with the unit on in, which is 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, and crop or fit to that instead.
Q:How do I make an A4 image into a PDF?
Save the A4 image here, then drop it on the Image to PDF converter. Every image it takes lands on an A4 sheet, scaled until it touches two edges and centred, the sheet turned to match the image; an image already at A4's 1:1.41 shape fills the sheet edge to edge, and one fitted here with a fill keeps that fill on the page. Several images become several pages of one PDF.
Q:What is the A4 aspect ratio?
1:1.41, the width to the height, from 210 × 297 mm. It is the square root of 2, the property every ISO 216 size shares: halve the long side and the shape stays the same. The A4 preset locks the frame to that ratio, so however you drag it, the export is a true A4 shape at 2480 × 3508 pixels, never a near miss that leaves a sliver of margin on the print.
Q:Does an A4 image have to be portrait?
No. The preset opens portrait, 2480 × 3508, because that is how a form states A4. For a landscape page, unlink the sides, type 297 and 210 into Custom size with the unit on mm, or 3508 and 2480 as px, and Apply; the frame turns with it. A landscape photo fits a landscape page with far smaller bands, and the Image to PDF converter turns the sheet to match the image on its own.
Q:What DPI do I need to print an image at A4?
300 DPI for a sharp photo print, which needs 2480 × 3508 pixels; 150 DPI, 1240 × 1754, for a draft or a poster seen from a distance. DPI is a label the printer applies, so the question is whether the source has enough pixels. Our 4964 × 2782 camera photo holds a portrait A4 crop of 1967 × 2782, enlarged 1.26 times to reach the page; a landscape page fits with pixels to spare.
Q:How big is an A4 JPEG file?
Our reference photo, 576.8 KB at 1920 × 1280, came out at 623.1 KB as a 2480 × 3508 JPEG, larger than its source: its 905 × 1280 centre crop was enlarged 2.7 times to fill the page. Type a ceiling into Max file size when an upload states one, and the file comes back at or under it.
Q:Do you keep my scans?
No. We keep nothing: files are processed and wiped automatically, never archived and never used for anything else. Saving strips EXIF metadata, including the GPS location a phone writes into a photo of a document, so the page you print or upload carries no record of where it was taken. There is no account, no watermark and no charge for the A4 export.
