Convert an image to 400×400 pixels

Convert to 400 × 400 pixels, the profile photo size X recommends and LinkedIn's minimum. The editor opens on the square; crop around the face or fit the whole picture, and Save exports exactly 400 × 400. Part of the image resizer.

Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

Answered

What is 400 × 400 used for?

The profile photo: 400 × 400 is the size X recommends, LinkedIn’s minimum and the size Mastodon scales every avatar to.

Where 400 × 400 is asked for: X profile photo, LinkedIn profile photo, LinkedIn Page logo, Etsy profile photo, Mastodon avatar, Amazon Ads brand logo. Each rule and its source are on the page.

X’s Help Center recommends profile images at 400x400 pixels, up to 2 MB, in JPEG, GIF or PNG. LinkedIn accepts a profile photo from 400 × 400 up to 7680 × 4320 and recommends 400 × 400 for a Page logo. Etsy recommends 400 × 400 for a profile photo, Mastodon downscales every avatar to 400 × 400, and Amazon Ads asks for a square brand logo of at least 400 × 400.

Answered

How do I keep my face inside the circle?

Crop with the face in the middle and room around the head.

A 400 × 400 profile photo as X and LinkedIn show it: a circle inside the square, the corners, 21% of the picture, hidden. The face belongs in the middle with room around the head.

The file is square, but X and LinkedIn show a profile photo as a circle, so the corners disappear: 21 percent of a 400 × 400 picture sits outside the circle. Drag the frame until the face is centred, then leave a margin above the hair and beside the ears, because the circle cuts closest there. A logo needs the same margin, or its corners go.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 400 × 400 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 400 × 400: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 400 × 267 with a 67 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 400 × 400 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 400 × 267 inside the square, with a 67-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 400 × 400 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 400 × 400 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 400 × 400 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 31% to reach 400 × 400.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 1:1, is 1280 × 1280; the export scaled it to 31 percent of that, to 400 × 400, in one pass: 27.5 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 400 × 400 image?

AVIF, at 14.8 KB for our reference photo at 400 × 400.

The reference photo at 400 × 400 in four formats, measured: AVIF 14.8 KB, WebP 25.4 KB, JPEG 27.5 KB, PNG 88.6 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 400 × 400 crop came to 25.4 KB as WebP and 27.5 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 88.6 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 400 × 400 is the wrong size

  • A Slack profile photo?

Slack needs at least 512 × 512; the 512 × 512 page opens on it.

  • An X header?

The header is 1500 × 500; the X header page opens on it.

  • A LinkedIn banner?

The LinkedIn banner page carries 1584 × 396 and the profile photo beside it.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

How do I convert an image to 400x400 pixels?

Drop the image into the tool above. The editor opens on Crop with 400 × 400 in force and the square drawn on the picture. Drag it to the part you want, or press Fit to keep the whole picture on white, then Save. The export is exactly 400 × 400 pixels, compressed, and never stretched.

Is 400x400 the right size for an X (Twitter) profile picture?

Yes. X's Help Center recommends 400x400 pixels for profile images, with a 2 MB maximum, in JPEG, GIF or PNG. X shows the photo as a circle, so keep the face in the middle. Our reference photo weighs 27.5 KB as a JPEG at 400 × 400, far under the cap.

What size is a LinkedIn profile picture?

At least 400 × 400 pixels and at most 7680 × 4320, as PNG or JPG up to 8 MB, by LinkedIn's Help. A 400 × 400 export meets the minimum exactly, and a larger square works as well. LinkedIn does not take GIFs, and it shows the photo as a circle, so centre the face.

Why does my 400x400 image look pixelated?

Usually because the source had fewer than 400 pixels and was enlarged to reach the square, or because a copy was resized again. Start from the largest original you have: scaling down to 400 × 400 keeps edges clean, and enlarging to it cannot add detail. Blocks from heavy JPEG compression stay after a resize.

How many KB is a 400x400 image?

Our reference photo at 400 × 400 came to 27.5 KB as a JPEG, 14.8 KB as AVIF, 25.4 KB as WebP and 88.6 KB as PNG. Every one is far under X's 2 MB cap and LinkedIn's 8 MB. A detailed photo weighs a little more; Max file size in Advanced settings caps it when a form asks.

Is 400x400 big enough for Slack or Zoom?

Not for Slack: a Slack profile photo must be at least 512 × 512, and the 512 × 512 page makes that size. Zoom states no pixel size, only a JPG, GIF or PNG under 2 MB, so a 400 × 400 photo works there. For both, keep the face centred; each app crops the corners.

JPG or PNG for a 400x400 logo?

PNG for a logo with sharp edges, text or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. JPG for a photo: our reference photo is 27.5 KB as a JPEG at 400 × 400 against 88.6 KB as PNG. LinkedIn takes PNG or JPG for a Page logo and X takes JPEG, GIF or PNG, so keep WebP and AVIF for your own site.
