Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. What is 1024 × 1024 used for?

An app icon and an AI image: 1024 × 1024 is the square Apple lays app icons out on and a standard size of OpenAI’s image models.

Where 1024 × 1024 is asked for: Apple app icon, Xcode icon set, OpenAI image models, SDXL, Facebook and Instagram Shops, Slack profile photo. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Apple’s guidelines lay out iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS icons at 1024 × 1024 pixels, and Xcode makes every smaller iOS variant from that one square. OpenAI’s DALL·E 2 takes 256, 512 or 1024 squares, and DALL·E 3 and the GPT image models list 1024 × 1024 among their sizes; Stability AI trained SDXL on pictures of about 1024 × 1024 pixels. Meta recommends 1024 × 1024 for Facebook and Instagram Shops, and Slack caps profile photos at 1024 × 1024.

Answered

What size should an iOS app icon be?

1024 × 1024 for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS: one square, the corners left square.

Apple's app icon layout sizes to one scale: 1024 × 1024 for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS; 1088 × 1088 for watchOS; 800 × 480 for tvOS. The system masks the corners and makes the smaller sizes itself.

Apple’s table lists the layout size as 1024 × 1024 pixels for those four; watchOS icons are 1088 × 1088 and tvOS icons 800 × 480, so those two are the exceptions. The system masks the corners into a rounded shape and scales the icon down itself, which is why Xcode needs only the one square for iOS. Crop your artwork to the square here, pick PNG, and leave the corners square in the file.

Answered

Why doesn't my photo come out square when I export it at 1024 × 1024?

Because a photo app’s export size bounds the long side; it does not crop.

Our 3:2 reference photo exported at "1024 × 1024" in a photo app comes out 1024 × 683: the long side fits the number and the shape stays. A square needs a crop, or a fill of 171 pixels above and below.

Ask a photo app for 1024 × 1024 and our 3:2 reference photo comes out 1024 × 683: the long side fits the number and the shape stays. A square needs a crop or a fill, which this editor does. Crop fills the square with the middle of the photo; Fit keeps all of it at 1024 × 683 on white, with a 171-pixel band above and below. Either way, Save writes 1024 × 1024.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 1024 × 1024 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 1024 × 1024: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 1024 × 683 with a 171 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 1024 × 1024 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 1024 × 683 inside the square, with a 171-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 1024 × 1024 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 1024 × 1024 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 1024 × 1024 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 80% to reach 1024 × 1024.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 1:1, is 1280 × 1280; the export scaled it to 80 percent of that, to 1024 × 1024, in one pass: 142.8 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 1024 × 1024 image?

AVIF, at 68.5 KB for our reference photo at 1024 × 1024.

The reference photo at 1024 × 1024 in four formats, measured: AVIF 68.5 KB, WebP 121.7 KB, JPEG 142.8 KB, PNG 476.4 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 1024 × 1024 crop came to 121.7 KB as WebP and 142.8 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 476.4 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 1024 × 1024 is the wrong size

  • A Google Play icon?

    Play wants 512 × 512; the 512 × 512 page opens on it.

  • An Apple Watch or Apple TV icon?

watchOS icons are 1088 × 1088 and tvOS icons 800 × 480; type them into Custom size.

  • A print?

At 300 DPI this square is 3.41 × 3.41 in; the inches page starts from the paper size.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

Is 1024x1024 high resolution?

For a screen, it is plenty for an icon, an avatar or a post: 1,048,576 pixels, just over a megapixel. For print it is small: at 300 DPI it prints 3.41 × 3.41 in, or 8.7 × 8.7 cm. It is a standard square of OpenAI's image models, and SDXL was trained around it, so many AI images start here.

Is 1024x1024 the same as 2x2?

No. A 2 × 2 inch photo at 300 DPI is 600 × 600 pixels, while 1024 × 1024 at the same density prints 3.41 × 3.41 in. For a US passport photo, the 2 × 2 passport page opens on 2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI and carries the State Department's rules with their source.

Why is 1024x1024 the standard size for AI images?

Because the models were built around it. Stability AI trained SDXL on pictures of about 1024 × 1024 pixels, and OpenAI lists 1024 × 1024 as a standard size for DALL·E 3 and its GPT image models, with DALL·E 2 at 256, 512 or 1024. Stable Diffusion 1.5 was trained at 512 × 512. Resize a picture here to feed any of them.

Does Google Play want a 1024x1024 icon?

No. Google Play's app icon is 512 × 512, a 32-bit PNG with alpha. Its two 1024 figures are the icon's 1024 KB file-size cap and the 1024 × 500 feature graphic, and neither is a square. The 512 × 512 page makes the Play icon; this square is Apple's.

Is 1024x1024 good for Instagram posts?

Yes. Instagram keeps a photo from 320 to 1,080 pixels wide at its own resolution when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so a 1024 × 1024 square uploads as it is. A 1080 × 1080 square fills the full width Instagram shows; the Instagram page opens on its sizes with their source.

How big is a 1024x1024 image in MB?

Well under one. Our reference photo at 1024 × 1024 came to 142.8 KB as a JPEG, 121.7 KB as WebP, 68.5 KB as AVIF and 476.4 KB as PNG. A DALL·E 2 edit wants a square PNG under 4 MB, which even the PNG meets many times over.

How do I make a 1024x1024 transparent PNG?

Drop a transparent PNG, keep Crop with no fill, and pick PNG above the drop zone: the export keeps the transparent pixels. Fit paints the space around the picture white, so it removes the transparency. For a truecolour PNG, untick Auto under Quality in Advanced settings and set 100; at Auto the PNG is palette-optimised.
