Resize an image to 1280×720

Resize an image to 1280 × 720, the 720p HD frame, for a TV banner, a video reference, a Zoom background or a thumbnail. The editor opens on the frame; you crop or fit, and Save exports exactly 1280 × 720. Part of the image resizer.

Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

Answered

What is 1280 × 720 used for?

The 720p frame: some destinations want exactly 1280 × 720, others take it as the smallest 16:9 image they accept.

Where 1280 × 720 is asked for: 720p (HD), Android TV banner, Roku HD splash screen, Sora 2 reference image, Twitch highlight thumbnail, Zoom virtual background. Each rule and its source are on the page.

The exact ones first. Google Play’s Android TV banner is 1280 by 720 pixels, Roku’s HD splash screen is 1280x720, and OpenAI’s Sora 2 needs a reference image that matches the video’s size, with 1280 × 720 among the sizes it makes. Then the floors: Twitch highlight thumbnails must be 16:9 and at least 1280 × 720, and Zoom asks for a background of at least 1280 × 720 when you are unsure of your camera’s shape. A larger 16:9 image works for the floors; the exact ones need this page.

Answered

Is 1280 × 720 still the YouTube thumbnail size?

No longer the number YouTube gives, but a 1280 × 720 thumbnail still uploads.

YouTube thumbnail sizes to one scale: the 640 pixel minimum width (640 × 360), this page's 1280 × 720, and the 3840 × 2160 YouTube Help recommends today. All three are 16:9, and a 1280 × 720 file uploads.

YouTube’s help page on custom thumbnails now asks for 3840 × 2160, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as a JPG or PNG up to 2 MB from a phone. A 1280 × 720 file is 16:9 and twice the minimum width, so it passes; 3840 × 2160 is what YouTube recommends. Many pages still call 1280 × 720 the official size. The thumbnail page opens on the thumbnail and carries YouTube’s current numbers with the source.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 1280 × 720 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 1280 × 720: Crop keeps a 16:9 slice, 84% of its height; Fit keeps the whole picture at 1080 × 720 with a 100 pixel band of fill on each side.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 1280 × 720 is 16:9, wider than the photo, so the top and the bottom give. Crop keeps 84 percent of the photo’s height and its full width; drag the frame up or down to the part that matters. Fit keeps the whole picture at 1080 × 720 inside the frame, with a 100-pixel band of fill on each side.

Stretching would pull the picture to 1280 × 720 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 1280 × 720 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 1280 × 720 to one scale: cropped to 16:9 it is 1920 × 1080, which the export scales down to 67% to reach 1280 × 720.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 16:9, is 1920 × 1080; the export scaled it to 67 percent of that, to 1280 × 720, in one pass: 137.6 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 1280 × 720 image?

AVIF, at 66.5 KB for our reference photo at 1280 × 720.

The reference photo at 1280 × 720 in four formats, measured: AVIF 66.5 KB, WebP 120.1 KB, JPEG 137.6 KB, PNG 449.3 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 1280 × 720 crop came to 120.1 KB as WebP and 137.6 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 449.3 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 1280 × 720 is the wrong size

  • A YouTube thumbnail?

The thumbnail page carries what YouTube recommends today, 3840 × 2160, with the source.

  • Steam screenshots or a Teams Rooms display?

Both need at least 1920 × 1080; the 1920 × 1080 page opens on it.

  • A vertical frame?

720p stood on end is 720 × 1280; type it into Custom size with the sides unlinked, or open the 1080 × 1920 page.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

Is 1280x720 HD or full HD?

HD, not Full HD. YouTube's resolution page lists 1280 × 720 as 720p (HD) and 1920 × 1080 as 1080p; Full HD is the name screens give 1920 × 1080. 1280 × 720 holds 921,600 pixels, 44 percent of Full HD's 2,073,600.

Is 1280x720 the same as 720p?

Yes. 720p means 720 rows of pixels at 16:9, and 16:9 at 720 rows is 1280 pixels wide, so 1280 × 720 and 720p name the same frame. YouTube's resolution table lists it as '720p (HD): 1280x720', beside 1080p at 1920 × 1080 and 2160p at 3840 × 2160.

How do I make a portrait photo 1280x720?

Two ways, both without stretching. Crop keeps a 16:9 band of it: a 3:4 portrait keeps 42.2% of its height, so drag the band to the face. Fit keeps the whole photo standing in the frame with bands of fill, 370 px at each side, in white, black or any colour from the well. Save exports exactly 1280 × 720 either way.

Should I use 1280x720 or 1920x1080?

Use the number the destination names. Android TV banners, Roku HD splash screens and a Sora 2 reference need exactly 1280 × 720. Steam store screenshots need at least 1920 × 1080, and so do Teams Rooms displays. For a slide or a thumbnail either works, and 1920 × 1080 holds 2.25 times the pixels.

What size should a Zoom virtual background be?

Match your camera. Zoom says a 16:9 camera works well with 1280 × 720 or 1920 × 1080, and when you are unsure, to use at least 1280 × 720. The image must be a 24-bit PNG or a JPG, up to 15 MB. Save it as a JPG here and the file stays far under the cap.

Why does PowerPoint save my slides as 1280x720 pictures?

Because PowerPoint exports a slide as a picture at 96 dots per inch by default, and a widescreen slide is 13.333 × 7.5 inches: 96 dots across each inch gives 1280 × 720. Microsoft's page on high-resolution export shows the table and how to raise the resolution. Or export larger and resize the picture here.
