Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

Answered

What is 1000 × 1000 used for?

A product photo, a visa photo and a profile picture: 1000 × 1000 is where Amazon’s zoom begins and the largest square India’s e-Visa accepts.

Where 1000 × 1000 is asked for: Amazon product zoom, Indian e-Visa photo, Slack profile photo, Facebook and Instagram Shops, SoundCloud profile image. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Amazon counts the longest side. “Images with 1,000+ pixels on the longest side enable the zoom function,” its product image guide says, and it asks for no square, so 1000 × 1000 is the smallest square that zooms. India’s e-Visa is stricter: the photo must be square, from 350 × 350 to 1000 × 1000 pixels, a JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB. Slack takes a profile photo from 512 × 512 to 1024 × 1024, and SoundCloud’s square minimum is 800 × 800, so the same file clears both.

Answered

Is 1000 × 1000 enough for Amazon zoom?

Yes, exactly at the line: Amazon turns zoom on at 1,000 pixels on the longest side.

Amazon's product image rules against a 1000 × 1000 photo: zoom from 1,000 pixels on the longest side, uploads refused under 500, a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product at 85% of the image, and small images not to be enlarged.

The same guide refuses anything under 500 pixels and asks for the MAIN image on pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling 85 percent of the image. Fit on the white fill keeps a packshot whole: our 3:2 reference photo sits at 1000 × 667 between two 167-pixel bands of white. Crop suits a product that already fills its photo. Amazon adds one warning in its own words: “Do not artificially enlarge small images.” A photo under 1,000 pixels comes out softer at this size, so start from the camera’s file, not a copy a chat app has shrunk.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 1000 × 1000 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 1000 × 1000: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 1000 × 667 with a 167 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 1000 × 1000 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 1000 × 667 inside the square, with a 167-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 1000 × 1000 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 1000 × 1000 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 1000 × 1000 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 78% to reach 1000 × 1000.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 1:1, is 1280 × 1280; the export scaled it to 78 percent of that, to 1000 × 1000, in one pass: 137.7 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 1000 × 1000 image?

AVIF, at 66.4 KB for our reference photo at 1000 × 1000.

The reference photo at 1000 × 1000 in four formats, measured: AVIF 66.4 KB, WebP 118.3 KB, JPEG 137.7 KB, PNG 450.7 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 1000 × 1000 crop came to 118.3 KB as WebP and 137.7 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 450.7 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 1000 × 1000 is the wrong size

  • An Etsy or Shopify listing?

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels and Shopify says 2048 × 2048 usually displays best. Type the larger number into Custom size.

  • Facebook or Instagram Shops?

Meta recommends 1024 × 1024 for catalogue images; the 1024 × 1024 page opens on it.

  • A print?

At 300 DPI this square is only 3.33 × 3.33 in. The inches page starts from the paper size and works out the pixels.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

How do I resize an image to 1000x1000 without cropping?

Press Fit once the editor opens. The whole photo scales to sit inside 1000 × 1000 on a white fill, or any colour from the well: our 3:2 reference photo lands at 1000 × 667 with a 167-pixel band above and below. Nothing is cut and nothing is stretched, and Save exports exactly 1000 × 1000 pixels.

Does Amazon require square 1000x1000 images?

No. Amazon's product image guide counts the longest side: 1,000 pixels or more turns on zoom, and anything under 500 pixels is refused. A 1000 × 1500 photo zooms as well as a square one. The MAIN image must still sit on a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product at 85 percent of the frame.

How big is a 1000x1000 image in KB?

Our reference photo came to 137.7 KB as a JPEG at 1000 × 1000, 118.3 KB as WebP, 66.4 KB as AVIF and 450.7 KB as PNG. A photo with finer detail weighs more. When a form caps the bytes, set Max file size in Advanced settings before you save, and the engine stays under it.

How big is 1000x1000 pixels in inches?

A pixel size has no inches until a print density is chosen. At 300 DPI, the usual print resolution, 1000 × 1000 pixels prints 3.33 × 3.33 in, or 8.5 × 8.5 cm: a small photo. For a larger print, start from the paper size instead; the inches page works out the pixels a print needs.

Is 1000x1000 one megapixel?

Yes. 1000 × 1000 is 1,000,000 pixels, and a megapixel is one million pixels, so the square is exactly one megapixel. A photo with more pixels than that scales down to it and stays sharp; one with fewer is enlarged to reach it and looks softer, because enlarging adds pixels without adding detail.

Should I use 1000x1000 or 1024x1024?

Use the number your destination names. Meta recommends 1024 × 1024 for Facebook and Instagram Shops, and Slack caps profile photos at 1024 × 1024. Amazon's zoom starts at 1,000 pixels, and India's e-Visa stops at 1000 × 1000. The two squares differ by 24 pixels a side, so on a screen they look the same.

What is the Indian e-Visa photo size in pixels?

A square from 350 × 350 to 1000 × 1000 pixels, saved as a JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB, by the upload guide on indianvisaonline.gov.in. This page exports the largest square. Set Max file size to 300 KB in Advanced settings before you save if the file comes out heavier, and the engine keeps it under.
