Resize an image to 64×64

Resize an image to 64 × 64 for a favicon, a Windows app icon, a Minecraft server icon or a 64 × 64 LED panel. The editor opens on the square; crop tight, and Save exports exactly 64 × 64. Part of the image resizer.

What is 64 × 64 used for?

A tiny square: 64 × 64 is a favicon Google can show, a Windows icon size, the icon beside a Minecraft server’s name, and the whole picture on a 64 × 64 LED panel.

Where 64 × 64 is asked for: Google Search favicon, Windows app icon, Minecraft server icon, 64 × 64 LED panel, Divoom Pixoo-64. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Google Search asks for a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 pixels and recommends one larger than 48 × 48, which 64 × 64 is. Windows requires a 64-pixel icon among its fourteen target sizes. Minecraft shows a server’s server-icon.png at 64 × 64 in the server list, by the community wiki and the Spigot docs. Adafruit’s 64 × 64 panel is 4,096 LEDs in a grid, and Divoom’s Pixoo-64 is a 64 × 64 pixel display.

Can I make a Minecraft skin or pixel art at 64 × 64 here?

No: this editor smooths as it scales, and a skin is drawn pixel by pixel.

What a photo resizer does well at 64 × 64 and what it does not: a Minecraft server icon, a favicon source and a picture for an LED panel are pictures shrunk to fit, which it does; a Minecraft skin and pixel art are drawn pixel by pixel and need a skin editor or nearest-neighbour scaling.

A Minecraft skin is a 64 × 64 map of the character’s parts, and the launcher refuses anything that is not a 64 × 64 or 64 × 32 PNG. Resizing a picture blends neighbouring pixels into new colours, and at Auto our PNG is palette-optimised, which can dither colours; either spoils a skin or a sprite. Use a skin editor, or a pixel editor with nearest-neighbour scaling, which copies pixels without mixing them. A server icon, a favicon or a panel picture is a picture shrunk to fit, and that is what this page does well.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 64 × 64 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 64 × 64: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 64 × 43 with a 11 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 64 × 64 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 64 × 43 inside the square, with a 11-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 64 × 64 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 64 × 64 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 64 × 64 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 5% to reach 64 × 64.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 1:1, is 1280 × 1280; the export scaled it to 5 percent of that, to 64 × 64, in one pass: 1.4 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 64 × 64 image?

AVIF, at 0.8 KB for our reference photo at 64 × 64.

The reference photo at 64 × 64 in four formats, measured: AVIF 0.8 KB, WebP 1 KB, JPEG 1.4 KB, PNG 4.6 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 64 × 64 crop came to 1 KB as WebP and 1.4 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 4.6 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 64 × 64 is the wrong size

  • A Minecraft skin or pixel art?

Use a skin editor or a pixel editor with nearest-neighbour scaling; a photo resizer blends pixels.

  • A Google Play or web app icon?

    Those are 512 × 512; the 512 × 512 page opens on it.

  • A profile photo?

Networks want 400 × 400 or more; the 400 × 400 page opens on it.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

How do I make a 64x64 Minecraft server icon?

Crop your logo or picture to the square here with no fill, pick PNG above the drop zone, and Save. Rename the file server-icon.png, put it in the server's main folder beside server.jar, and restart the server: the server list shows it at 64 × 64. The Spigot docs and the Minecraft Wiki give the same steps.

Why does Minecraft say skin images must be 64x64 or 64x32 pixel PNG files?

Because the launcher accepts only a real PNG at exactly 64 × 64, or the older 64 × 32 layout, and players have reported that exact message. A JPEG renamed to .png, or a skin at another size, fails the check. A skin is a pixel map, so make it in a skin editor rather than by resizing a photo.

Is 64x64 a good size for a favicon?

Yes. Google Search wants a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 pixels and recommends one larger than 48 × 48, so 64 × 64 meets both. Save it as PNG: Google lists PNG and ICO among its favicon formats, and WebP is not on the list. Keep the larger original too, for the other sizes a site needs.

How do I resize an image to 64x64 without it getting blurry?

Start large and crop tight, so the subject fills the square: at 64 × 64 the whole picture is 4,096 pixels, and lines thinner than a pixel fade. Scaling down once from the original keeps edges as clean as the size allows. Simplify a busy logo first, because small text will not survive at this size.

How many pixels is 64x64?

4,096: 64 times 64. That is the whole picture a 64 × 64 LED panel shows, one LED per pixel. It is also the grid Stable Diffusion 1.5 works on inside the model for a 512 × 512 image, because its autoencoder divides each side by 8.

What file format is best for a 64x64 icon?

PNG for a favicon or an icon with a transparent background, since Google's favicon formats include PNG and not WebP. For a photo at this size AVIF came out smallest in our measurement: 0.8 KB as AVIF, 1 KB as WebP, 1.4 KB as JPEG, 4.6 KB as PNG. At 64 × 64 every format is tiny.

How do I put a picture on a 64x64 LED matrix or a Pixoo 64?

Resize it here to exactly 64 × 64, cropped tight so the subject fills the panel, and save it as a PNG or a JPG. Then load it with the panel's own app or code; Divoom's app is how a Pixoo-64 takes images. Divoom itself says the Pixoo-64 suits pixel-style art more than photos.
