What is 512 × 512 used for?

An icon and a sticker: 512 × 512 is the Google Play app icon, the large icon a web app needs to install, and the exact size of a WhatsApp sticker.

Where 512 × 512 is asked for: Google Play app icon, Installable web app, WhatsApp sticker, Telegram sticker, Slack profile photo, Stable Diffusion 1.5. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Google Play asks for a 512 by 512 icon, a 32-bit PNG with alpha up to 1024 KB, and rounds the corners itself. Chrome installs a web app only when its manifest lists a 192 and a 512 pixel icon. WhatsApp stickers must be exactly 512 × 512, in WebP, 100 KB or less, on a transparent background, and Telegram needs one side at exactly 512. Slack takes profile photos from 512 × 512, Roblox experience icons start at 512, and Stable Diffusion 1.5 was trained at 512 × 512.

How do I make a Google Play icon or a sticker at 512 × 512?

Crop with no fill, then pick the format the store names.

Three 512 × 512 files and the format each rule names: a Google Play icon as a 32-bit PNG with alpha (PNG at Quality 100), a WhatsApp sticker as a WebP of 100 KB or less on a transparent background, and a web app icon listed in the manifest beside a 192 pixel one.

A transparent PNG stays transparent through Crop: the editor saves it with its alpha, and the engine’s PNG, WebP and AVIF all keep the transparent pixels. For Google Play, pick PNG, then untick Auto under Quality in Advanced settings and set 100: the file is a truecolour PNG with alpha, the 32-bit PNG Play asks for. At Auto the PNG is palette-optimised instead. For a WhatsApp sticker, pick WebP; our reference photo came to 41 KB as WebP at this size, and Max file size keeps any sticker under 100 KB. Leave the corners square for Play, which masks them itself.

Why 512 × 512 and not 500 × 500?

Because 512 is a power of two, the sizes computers halve cleanly.

The power-of-two sizes Discord's developer reference lets an app request, 16 to 4096, with 512 on the ladder and 500 not; and Stable Diffusion 1.5's autoencoder dividing each side by 8, so a 512 × 512 picture is a 64 × 64 grid inside the model.

Discord’s developer docs let an app request an image at any power of two from 16 to 4096, and 512 is one; 500 is not. Stable Diffusion 1.5 was trained at 512 × 512, and its autoencoder divides each side by 8, so a 512 × 512 picture becomes a 64 × 64 grid inside the model. Where a form says 512, a 500 fails it: Slack’s minimum is 512 × 512. The two look the same on a screen, but a checker counts the pixels.

How do I resize an image to 512 × 512 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 512 × 512: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 512 × 341 with a 86 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 512 × 512 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 512 × 341 inside the square, with a 86-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 512 × 512 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Does resizing to 512 × 512 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 512 × 512 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 40% to reach 512 × 512.

Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

The same 512 × 512 crop came to 41 KB as WebP and 44.2 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 138.4 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

How do I make a picture 512x512 on my iPhone?

Can I resize a PNG to 512x512 and keep the transparent background?

Yes, with Crop and no fill. The editor saves a transparent PNG with its alpha, and the engine keeps the transparent pixels as PNG, WebP or AVIF. Fit paints the space around the picture white, so it removes the transparency, and JPG cannot hold it at all. Pick PNG or WebP above the drop zone before you save.

Why does my image look pixelated at 512x512?

Because the source was smaller than 512 pixels and was enlarged, or it was a low-quality copy. Enlarging adds pixels, not detail: an AI render made at 256 × 256 stays soft at 512 × 512. Start from the largest original; scaling down keeps edges clean. Amazon's Appstore guide warns the same about scaling an icon up.

How big is a 512x512 image in KB?
