Resize an image to 1080×1920

Resize an image to 1080 × 1920, the upright Full HD frame, for a full-screen ad, an app screenshot or a phone wallpaper. The editor opens on the frame; you crop or fit, and Save exports exactly 1080 × 1920. Part of the image resizer.

Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

What is 1080 × 1920 used for?

The upright Full HD frame: Snapchat’s full-screen canvas, Pinterest’s idea ads, Google Play’s portrait screenshots and the iPhone 8 Plus screen are all 1080 × 1920.

Where 1080 × 1920 is asked for: Snapchat full-screen ad, Pinterest idea ads, Google Play portrait screenshots, App Store previews, 5.5-inch iPhone, iPhone 8 Plus screen. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Snapchat’s full-screen ads are a 1080 x 1920 canvas and take images from 720 × 1280, up to 5 MB. Pinterest recommends 1080 × 1920 for full-bleed idea ads. Google Play wants portrait screenshots of at least 1080 × 1920 before it promotes an app, and App Store Connect lists 1080 × 1920 for 5.5-inch iPhone previews. Instagram Help names no story size: reels may be anything from 1.91:1 to 9:16 at 720 pixels or more, and Meta’s ads guide asks 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels ads.

Answered

Will a 1080 × 1920 wallpaper fit my iPhone?

It fills the screen with the sides trimmed: newer iPhones are taller than 9:16.

A 1080 × 1920 wallpaper on two iPhones: the iPhone 8 Plus screen is 1080 × 1920 upright and shows all of it; the iPhone 16 screen is 1179 × 2556, taller than 9:16, so filling its height shows about 82% of the width, 886 of 1,080 pixels.

The iPhone 16 screen is 2556 by 1179 pixels, by Apple’s own spec page, a taller shape than 1080 × 1920. Scaled to fill that height, a 1080 × 1920 wallpaper is about 1,438 pixels wide on the screen, so about 82 percent of its width shows. The iPhone 8 Plus, at 1920 by 1080, shows all of it. Keep the subject in the middle, where every phone keeps it.

Can an AI image generator make a 1080 × 1920 image?

Not at that exact size: OpenAI’s image models need both sides in multiples of 16.

An AI image at 1152 × 2048, a 9:16 size OpenAI's image models accept (both sides multiples of 16), and the same picture resized here to exactly 1080 × 1920, which the models cannot be asked for because 1080 is not a multiple of 16.

OpenAI’s image guide sets custom sizes at multiples of 16, between 655,360 and 8,294,400 pixels in all, and 1080 is not a multiple of 16, so 1080 × 1920 cannot be asked for directly. Generate a 9:16 image a little larger, such as 1152 × 2048, which meets the rule, then resize it here to exactly 1080 × 1920. Sora 2 Pro exports video at 1080 × 1920, but that is a video, not a still.

Answered

How do I resize an image to 1080 × 1920 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 1080 × 1920: Crop keeps a 9:16 slice, 38% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 1080 × 720 with a 600 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is a landscape 3:2, and 1080 × 1920 is 9:16, much taller, so most of the width gives. Crop keeps a slice 38 percent of the photo’s width, the full height; put the subject in the middle before you save. Fit keeps the whole picture at 1080 × 720, with a 600-pixel band of fill above and below. A photo taken upright starts much closer to the frame.

Stretching would pull the picture to 1080 × 1920 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

What happens when my image is smaller than 1080 × 1920?

It is enlarged to the frame, because an exact size is the promise, and enlargement adds pixels without adding detail.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 1080 × 1920 to one scale: cropped to 9:16 it is 720 × 1280, which the export enlarges 1.5 times to reach 1080 × 1920.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo is the case. Cropped to 9:16 it is 720 × 1280, and the export scaled that up 1.5 times to 1080 × 1920: 223.1 KB as a JPEG, with no more detail than the crop had. Start from the largest copy you have, the original rather than one a chat app has already shrunk, and the frame fills with real pixels.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 1080 × 1920 image?

AVIF, at 97.1 KB for our reference photo at 1080 × 1920.

The reference photo at 1080 × 1920 in four formats, measured: AVIF 97.1 KB, WebP 164.8 KB, JPEG 223.1 KB, PNG 833.6 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 1080 × 1920 crop came to 164.8 KB as WebP and 223.1 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 833.6 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 1080 × 1920 is the wrong size

  • Meta Stories or Reels ads?

Meta asks for 1440 × 2560; type it into Custom size with the sides unlinked.

  • A landscape screen?

On its side this is 1920 × 1080; the 1920 × 1080 page opens on it.

  • A reel cover?

Instagram recommends 420 × 654 for the cover, which is not 9:16.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

Is 1080x1920 the same as 9:16?

Yes. 1080 divided by 1920 is 0.5625, the same as 9 divided by 16, so 1080 × 1920 is the 9:16 shape at Full HD resolution: 1920 × 1080 stood on end. The 9:16 aspect ratio page covers the shape at every size; this page makes the exact file.

What is 1080x1920 called?

Vertical or portrait Full HD: the 1920 × 1080 frame, known as 1080p or Full HD, turned upright. Wikipedia's 1080p article lists 1080 × 1920 at 9:16 in its table. It is the screen of the iPhone 8 Plus held upright and the canvas of Snapchat's full-screen ads.

Is 1080x1920 the right size for Instagram stories and reels?

It fits them, though Instagram Help names no story size. Reels can be anything from 1.91:1 to 9:16 at 720 pixels or more, and Meta's ads guide asks 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels ads. A 1080 × 1920 image is 9:16 and above every stated minimum; our Instagram story size guide has the safe zones.

What size is a TikTok photo?

TikTok's own pages give shapes and floors, not one size: in-feed video ads at 9:16 from 540 × 960, carousel ad images at 720 × 1280, and photos posted through its API up to 1080p, as JPEG or WebP. A 1080 × 1920 image meets all of them. The 1080 × 1920 figure itself is the guides', not TikTok's.

Should I use 1080x1920 or 1440x2560?

Use 1440 × 2560 for Meta's Stories and Reels ads, which ask for it, and 1080 × 1920 for Snapchat, Pinterest idea ads, Google Play screenshots and App Store previews, which name it. Both are 9:16. 1440 × 2560 holds 1.78 times the pixels; type it into Custom size with the sides unlinked.

Is 1080x1920 the same as 1920x1080?

The same pixels, turned: 1920 × 1080 is the landscape Full HD screen at 16:9, and 1080 × 1920 is that frame upright at 9:16. A photo cropped for one does not fit the other, because the long side changes direction. The 1920 × 1080 page opens on the landscape frame.
