Source: photo.jpg, 576.8 KB at 1920×1280, through the preset this page opens on (the centre cropped to the ratio and scaled to the size), then the engine at its defaults. The row is the real output.

Every byte count is the size of the actual file our engine produced from the named source, the same bytes you would download, not an estimate. The reference photo is one of our own photographs, an iguana on a branch, and the camera photo is a real one too. Drop your own file into the tool above to rerun any of them. How we measure names the sources and the settings.

What is 500 × 500 used for?

A floor more often than a target: 500 × 500 is the smallest product photo the big marketplaces take, and the size Etsy and GitHub recommend for a logo or an avatar.

Where 500 × 500 is asked for: Google Merchant Center, Facebook and Instagram Shops, Amazon and eBay, Etsy shop logo, GitHub avatar. Each rule and its source are on the page.

Google Merchant Center requires “at least 500 x 500 pixels for all product images” from January 31, 2027, with warnings on smaller images since July 2026, and YouTube Shopping ads on TV already need it. Meta sets 500 × 500 as the minimum for Facebook and Instagram Shops and recommends 1024 × 1024. Amazon refuses a photo under 500 pixels on its longest side, and eBay wants at least one photo that long. Etsy recommends a 500 × 500 shop logo, and GitHub says an avatar renders best at about 500 by 500.

Answered

Is 500 × 500 big enough for Amazon, eBay or Google Shopping?

Big enough to upload everywhere, not big enough to zoom.

A 500 × 500 photo against the marketplace floors: Google Merchant Center requires 500 × 500 from January 31, 2027 and eBay 500 pixels on the longest side, both met; Amazon uploads it but zooms only from 1,000 pixels; Meta Shops take it and recommend 1024 × 1024; Slack refuses it under 512 × 512.

Every marketplace floor above passes at 500 × 500, so the photo is accepted. Amazon turns zoom on only from 1,000 pixels on the longest side, and Meta recommends 1024 × 1024 for its Shops, so a listing that should zoom needs the 1000 × 1000 page instead. Slack is the one place the size fails: a profile photo there must be at least 512 × 512.

How do I resize an image to 500 × 500 without stretching it?

Crop it or fit it, the two things the Crop / Fit switch does, and never the third.

A 3:2 photo and two ways to make it 500 × 500: Crop keeps a 1:1 slice, 67% of its width; Fit keeps the whole picture at 500 × 333 with a 84 pixel band of fill above and below.

Our reference photo is 3:2 and 500 × 500 is square, so the sides give. Crop keeps the middle 67 percent of the photo’s width and all of its height; drag the frame to the face or the product first. Fit keeps the whole picture: it sits 500 × 333 inside the square, with a 84-pixel band of fill above and below, white unless you pick a colour from the well.

Stretching would pull the picture to 500 × 500 by squeezing everything in it, and the editor does not offer it. The Custom size box shows the output in pixels the whole time, so the number you see there is the file Save writes.

Answered

Does resizing to 500 × 500 lose quality?

Not the detail the frame can show: scaling down averages neighbouring pixels, and edges stay clean.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo and 500 × 500 to one scale: cropped to 1:1 it is 1280 × 1280, which the export scales down to 39% to reach 500 × 500.

Our 1920 × 1280 reference photo, cropped to 1:1, is 1280 × 1280; the export scaled it to 39 percent of that, to 500 × 500, in one pass: 42.9 KB as a JPEG. Detail finer than one pixel of the new size averages away, which is the point of a smaller file. Resize once, from the original; a copy resized twice loses a little more each time.

Answered

Which format is smallest for a 500 × 500 image?

AVIF, at 22.6 KB for our reference photo at 500 × 500.

The reference photo at 500 × 500 in four formats, measured: AVIF 22.6 KB, WebP 39.4 KB, JPEG 42.9 KB, PNG 131 KB. AVIF is the smallest.

The same 500 × 500 crop came to 39.4 KB as WebP and 42.9 KB as JPEG; as PNG it took 131 KB. PNG costs the most on a photo even palette-optimised, as it is at Auto; choose it for a logo, an icon or a screenshot with sharp edges or a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. With Quality at 100 in Advanced settings the PNG is truecolour and keeps every pixel, at a larger size. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source’s.

Be sure first

When 500 × 500 is the wrong size

  • A listing that should zoom?

Amazon zooms from 1,000 pixels on the longest side; the 1000 × 1000 page opens on it.

  • A Slack profile photo?

Slack wants at least 512 × 512; the 512 × 512 page opens on it.

  • A WhatsApp profile photo?

The WhatsApp page opens on 640 × 640 with the whole photo kept.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The size is already pressed above. One drop settles most of these.

How do I resize an image to 500x500 without cropping?

Press Fit once the editor opens. The whole photo scales to sit inside 500 × 500 on a white fill, or any colour from the well: our 3:2 reference photo lands at 500 × 333 with a 84-pixel band above and below. Nothing is cut and nothing is stretched, and Save exports exactly 500 × 500 pixels.

How do I make a picture 500x500 in Paint?

Paint keeps the shape when you resize, so a 4:3 photo typed to 500 pixels wide comes out 500 × 375. Untick "Maintain aspect ratio" and it becomes 500 × 500 by stretching. To keep the proportions, select a square and crop to it first, or use this page: Crop fills the square and Fit keeps the whole photo on white.

Does Google Shopping require 500x500 images?

From January 31, 2027. Google Merchant Center has announced that every product image must be at least 500 × 500 pixels from that date, with warnings on smaller images since July 2026, and YouTube Shopping ads on TV need it already. Today's floor is 100 × 100, or 250 × 250 for apparel. A 500 × 500 export meets the new rule exactly.

How many KB is a 500x500 image?

Our reference photo at 500 × 500 came to 42.9 KB as a JPEG, 22.6 KB as AVIF, 39.4 KB as WebP and 131 KB as PNG. A photo with finer detail weighs more. When a form caps the bytes, set Max file size in Advanced settings before you save, and the engine keeps the file under it.

Is 500x500 good for a profile picture?

For GitHub and an Etsy shop logo, yes: both recommend about 500 × 500. For Slack, no: a Slack profile photo must be at least 512 × 512. X recommends 400 × 400 and LinkedIn starts at 400 × 400, so 500 × 500 is more than either needs; the 400 × 400 page makes that size exactly.

Why does my 500x500 image have empty space around it?

Because Fit is on. Fit keeps the whole photo inside the square and fills the space left over, white unless you pick a colour. Our 3:2 reference photo fitted to 500 × 500 is 500 × 333 with a 84-pixel band above and below. Press Crop instead and the photo fills the square, its sides trimmed.

JPG or PNG for a 500x500 image?

JPG for a photo: our reference photo is 42.9 KB as a JPEG at 500 × 500 against 131 KB as PNG. PNG for a logo, text or anything with a transparent background, which JPEG blurs and cannot keep. Pick the format above the drop zone before you save; Auto keeps the source's own.
